statement after consulting with friends in the region. Please share this

*Stop the Thai Coup, Restore and Strengthen Democracy with Participation
for All*

After several months of political unrest in Thailand, the military declared
martial law on May 20, 2014, and then called leaders in for a supposed
attempt at dialogue before seizing power in a coup d’état on May 22.
General Prayuth Chan-ocha abolished the 2007 Constitution and dissolved the
caretaker Government and Senate. In subsequent days, the military has
summoned and detained scholars, activists, journalists and politicians,
even carrying out arbitrary arrests and secret detentions, targeting people
who think differently and who have campaigned for democratic and legal
reforms.

The coup leaders imposed a curfew, censored the media, and gave military
courts jurisdiction over all cases deemed threatening to national security.
These acts are unjustified and strongly undermine the fundamental
principles of human rights and democracy.

We condemn the military coup and believe that the only way to solve
political conflicts is through the genuine participation of people from all
classes and beliefs. A lasting social peace can only be achieved if the
marginalized sectors of society are taken into account and have a defining
role in a fair process that strengthens real democracy and equal rights for
all. Military seizure of power is a serious political setback and weakens
democratic institutions, exacerbating instead of calming social tensions.
This situation will only lead to more political violence. We believe that
peace is impossible under military rule.

 Therefore, we call on the military to:

   1.  Immediately restore democracy and return sovereignty to the Thai
   people.
    2. Unconditionally release all detainees regardless of their political
   affiliations and views.
    3. Respect human rights and human dignity, and guarantee fundamental
   civil and political rights for all, in accordance with its international
   obligations, ceasing courts martial.
    4. Respect the right of civilians to determine the direction of the
   country through democratic processes without any further military
   intervention.

We also urge all political groups and movements to embrace peaceful and
collaborative conflict resolution and compromise and to support the
restoration of constitutional rule and governance in Thailand based on
inclusive and participatory democratic principles and practices.

 *¡Abajo el Golpe en Tailandia! **Restauración y fortalecimiento de la
democracia **con la participación de todos*

Después de varios meses de inestabilidad política en Tailandia, el ejército
declaró la ley marcial el 20 de mayo de 2014 llamando a los líderes a un
supuesto diálogo infructuoso para luego justificar la declaratoria de un
golpe de Estado el 22 de Mayo. El General Prayuth Chan-ocha abolió la
Constitución del 2007 y disolvió el Gobierno en ejercicio y el Senado. Los
días siguientes, los militares emplazaron a presentarse y detuvieron a
académicos, activistas, periodistas y políticos, llevando adelante arrestos
arbitrarios y detenciones secretas dirigidas contra quienes tienen
opiniones contrarias y realizan campañas por reformas democráticas y
legales.

Los golpistas impusieron un toque de queda, censuraron medios de
comunicación, y dieron a los tribunales militares jurisdicción sobre todos
los casos considerados amenazas a la seguridad nacional. Estas medidas son
inaceptables y violan los principios fundamentales de los derechos humanos
y la democracia.

Condenamos el golpe de Estado militar y consideramos que la única manera de
resolver los conflictos políticos es a través de la participación efectiva
y genuina de todos los sectores sociales de la población. Una paz social
duradera sólo puede lograrse si los sectores mas marginados de la sociedad
son tomados en cuenta y tienen un rol decisivo en un proceso justo que
fortalezca la democracia real y la igualdad de derechos para todos. La
confiscación militar del poder es un revés político serio y debilita a las
instituciones democráticas exacerbando en lugar de calmar las tensiones
sociales. Esta situación sólo conducirá a más violencia política. Creemos
que la paz es imposible bajo el régimen militar.

Por lo tanto, hacemos un llamado a los militares para:

   1. Restaurar inmediatamente la democracia y devolver la soberanía al
   pueblo tailandés.
    2. Liberar incondicionalmente a todos los detenidos, independientemente
   de sus afiliaciones políticas y opiniones.
    3. Respetar los derechos humanos y la dignidad humana garantizando los
   derechos civiles y políticos fundamentales para todos de conformidad con el
   derecho  internacional y cesando las cortes marciales.
    4. Respetar el derecho de la población civil para determinar la
   dirección del país a través de procesos democráticos sin ninguna
   intervención militar.

Asimismo, llamamos a todos los grupos políticos y movimientos a promover
una resolución del conflicto pacifica y constructiva para la restauración
del orden constitucional y de la gobernabilidad en Tailandia sobre la base
de los principios y prácticas de la democracia participativa e inclusiva.
