The College wishes to recruit an Associate Research Fellow or Research
Fellow in social network analysis and web science to study the formation
and break up of online communities. The work will involve the collation and
analysis of large and complex social data sets, including data
visualisation and interpretation. The successful candidate will work as
part of an interdisciplinary team on their own and shared projects, using
web science, social network analysis and other related skills to further
understanding of digital communities and social media.

This ESRC funded post is available full-time from 1st March 2014 to 28th
February 2015 and will be and based at the Streatham Campus in Exeter.

The successful applicant will develop projects where computer science
skills can advance social science knowledge. The post will involve
assisting in the collation and analysis of large and complex social data
sets, including data visualisation and interpretation, and developing
independent research in areas that complement or extend the area of digital
social science.

The post will include working with research teams on computer science
applications to social issues, working with complex data and developing
analytical and visualisation tools for complex data. The successful
applicant will be able to present information on research progress and
outcomes, communicate complex information, orally, in writing and
electronically and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies.

Applicants will be able to handle, analyse and visualise large datasets,
have experience and an aptitude in computer programming in a suitable
language (e.g. R, Python), and be familiar with social network analysis, a
range of data analysis and visualisation tools (e.g. databases, SQL, Gephi).

Applicants will possess a relevant PhD or equivalent in a related field of
study and be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and
of research methods and techniques to work within established research
programmes.

For appointment at Associate Research Fellow level, the starting salary
will be from £25,014 up to £28,133 on Grade E, depending on qualifications
and experience. For appointment at Research Fellow level, the salary will
start from £32,590 on Grade F. Appointment at Grade F will be subject to
additional criteria and role responsibilities as defined in the job
description.
