The Foundation in Clekenwell

On Thursday 24th May, the Foundation participated in Clerkenwell Design Week 2012.
The sun brought scores of students, professionals, and interested London residents out on to the streets of Clerkenwell to see lectures, exhibitions and showrooms as part of the three-day programme. The day began with a lunchtime lecture from Ellen, presenting to around 50 practising designers and architects. Ellen explained how she came to be aware of the circular economy concept, and the role design plays in accelerating a systems-level change in the economy. Speaking in the showroom of  Cradle to Cradle carpet manufacturer Desso, Ellen was surrounded by examples of products that had been designed with recovery, disassembly and remanufacture in mind, and hoped to inspire further product and business innovation with impressive economic figures from the Foundation's recent report.

After a break in the afternoon, the Foundation's activities resumed for an evening workshop. Redesign Lab, created and executed by award-winning D&T teacher Steve Parkinson, invited around 50 designers, architects and Design and Technology teachers Their challenge was to take apart an everyday product - in this case a computer keyboard - assess it for ease of disassembly and material recovery, and suggest how that product could be redesigned for a future of finite resources and energy. A lively debate followed, with the groups raising many creative and innovative points, including:
	* How manufactures could increase the amount of valuable metal in the product to make it more effectively recoverable
	* the implications of widespread touchscreen keyboards
	* the life-cycle of electrical products, and what business models could support repair and technological upgrade.
Clerkenwell is a three-day festival celebrating design's creative richness, social relevance and technological advancements through an exciting programme of workshops, presentations, product launches and debates. The Week also features exhibitions, installations, street entertainment, music, food, parties and receptions, and around 20,000 register to attend each year.
Circular Economy Knowledge Transfer Networking Event
The first meeting of the Foundation's Circular Economy Knowledge Transfer Network will take place at Cisco House, overlooking the olympic park in London. The one-day event will comprise of a networking event, as well as two working group sessions on Polymers and Innovative Business Models. We regret to inform you that the event is now fully booked, but the Foundation will be producing a short video of the event that will be made available on ourYouTube page in early June.
