Twitter lists are one of the best ways to sort who you're following by
topic. This becomes especially useful when you are following more than 50 or
so people. I create lists by theme on Twitter (E.g. news, customers,
competitors), then use Hootsuite tabs to view each topic in near-real time.

Hootsuite is free as long as you don't have multiple Twitter accounts on
there:
