        Dear Michel

Few people are familiar with both the first two ideas in our Idioticon (see
right), and even fewer fully understand their relevance to organisations.

The first idea (*The Edge of Chaos*) is best known to medical researchers
and complexity theorists but should be much more widely understood.

Complexity science has shown that healthy organs and organisms (for example,
our hearts and muscles) often exist in conditions of uncertainty and
near-chaos, while regularity and stability can indicate an impending heart
attack, muscle seizure or degenerative disease.

The second comes from social anthropology and the work of Marcel Mauss and
Georges Bataille. *The Accursed Share* (La Part Maudite) suggests that
economic theory is more revealing when it focuses on excess (and what we do
with it) rather than on scarcity (and how we manage it).

Both these fascinating ideas have multiple implications for the way in which
we order our lives, for our society at large and for the many human
organisations within it.

Share<http://triarchypress.blogspot.com/2011/02/idioticon-accursed-share.html>.
(And please let us know <admin at triarchypress.com?subject=Idioticon> if you
have any suggestions for ideas and terms that we should add to the
Idioticon.)

*Triarchy's Glossary of Ideas*

An Idioticon (or Idiotikon) is simply a glossary - one covering a particular
field of thought.

At Triarchy Press, we're building an Idioticon [adding new terms each week]
of the most interesting ideas used in Systems Thinking, Complexity and
Cultural Theory and the other areas of organisational thinking that we
specialise in.

Each term offers useful ideas and insights for anyone trying to improve the
way that their organisation - or even society at large - works.

Above all, each term reminds us to look at the bigger picture.
