STS as method? (Meta)dimensions of the STS (trans)nationsConvenors: Martin

ENG Summary: Methodologies are a relevant question for Science and
Technology Studies. As a transdisciplinary field, the codes and practices
that researchers engage in with their own practices are diverse and plural.
For a long time this question was tangentially discussed, giving an open
space to creation and experimentation. But, in the fourth Handbook of STS
(Felt, Fouche, Miller and Smith-Doerr, 2017), the editors focus on the
field’s methods for first time. John Law (2017) introduces in the first
essay the idea of STS as a method, looking in several dimensions of our own
practices as case studies, rooted in the history of Science and Technology,
trying to differentiate national and disciplinary traditions and
influences. This panel extends this discussion and explores how we
understand these methods (and others). Considering ourselves members of
different ‘nations’ of researchers, we reflect on how the coexistence of
diversity, for different nationalities and epistemic cultures and
trajectories (Knorr Cetina, 1995), configures expressions about utility,
reliability, participation, and hegemony that keep open to conversation and
research about these scholarly practices for STS. Is STS a single method,
as Law indicates? What are our present methods? Are all the methods
situated in their countries and cultures? Who are the ‘nations’ in these
methods? Where are the boundaries to ‘hidden’ methods? What is the future
of these methods? We expect the panel to embrace these questions and to
unravel, a bit, the questions that the focus on method(s) offers.

ESP Resumen: Las metodologías son una pregunta relevante para los Estudios
de Ciencia y Tecnología. Como campo transdisciplinario, los códigos y
prácticas que los investigadores emplean con sus propias prácticas son
diversos y plurales. Durante mucho tiempo, esta cuestión fue discutida
tangencialmente, dando un espacio abierto a la creación y la
experimentación. Pero, en el cuarto Manual de STS (Felt, Fouche, Miller y
Smith-Doerr, 2017), los editores se centran en los métodos del campo por
primera vez. John Law (2017) presenta en el primer ensayo la idea de STS
como método, buscando en varias dimensiones nuestras propias prácticas como
estudios de casos, enraizados en la historia de la Ciencia y la Tecnología,
tratando de diferenciar las tradiciones e influencias nacionales y
disciplinarias. Este panel amplía esta discusión y explora cómo entendemos
estos métodos (y otros). Al considerarnos miembros de diferentes "naciones"

los métodos "ocultos"? ¿Cuál es el futuro de estos métodos? Esperamos que
el panel acepte estas preguntas y resuelva, un poco, las preguntas que
ofrece el enfoque en el (los) método (s).
