Ater from the Hackney Marshes to supply the City of London; but this was
rendered useless by the success of Sir Hugh Middleton's scheme for
supplying London with water in the same year. The constitution of the
college included a Provost and twenty Fellows, of whom eighteen were to
be in Holy Orders. Dean Sutcliffe himself was the first Provost. In 1616
the building stopped altogether for want of funds. The King issued a
