[PeDAGoG] learning through doing - more resources

Dear teachers and learners,

it has been heartening to read about the success of Pallavi and her
class in applying Melanie's 'method'. I have had similar experiences (as
a part-time/temporary tertiary teacher) whenever I have dared to depart
from the standard top-down methods of teaching and engage the students
in more experiential types of learning. In these instances I have set up
exercises and study topics where what happens in their daily lives is
related practically to the curriculum being taught, and the students
share what they are learning with each other.

Students who have been used to getting by with doing the minimum the
current system requires can indeed be sceptical and confused at the
beginning if they have never done anything like this before (but those
who dislike the current system usually take to it like ducks to water).
Once they get the hang of it, most students respond really well, learn
heaps more than they would from lectures, videos, etc., and become more
enthusiastic about what they are studying.

Plus if they are working in pairs and/or groups they develop
relationships of mutual support, which to my mind is a key part of the
'hidden curriculum' for 'alternative' educators.

Two really useful resources for educators new to this way of teaching
and learning are George Lakey's 2010 book /Facilitating Group Learning/
and the website Training for Change, which was set up by Lakey and other
'direct education' practitioners. Links to a comprehensive review of the
book and the website are below. Lakey and the Training for Change
educators are mostly not working in an academic setting, but rather in
the community, but in my view their methods are applicable wherever the
educator wants the students to really engage with the material being
taught, and with each other.

I am sure there are lots more resources out there and look forward to
hearing about them. 😁

nga mihi nui (warm greetings)

Christine
