initially this did not work, i unchecked the "administrator" in the
"user and groups" dialog, and now it works. perhaps that makes sense,
but it is odd or a bug.

i have been running the emc-1.01 version. when i execute the ".run"
file, i am prompted for the sudo password and at if i run the machine
for a little while, i am also prompted when i exit.

.the old bdi system never prompted me for sudo passwords and i would
like this new system to work the same way, but i would prefer not to run
as root. do you know the fix? i did compile the system as root if that
makes any difference.

As root, edit the /etc/sudoers file adding a line similar to:

david ALL=NOPASSWD:ALL

Note - This will allow you (or anyone else with your login) to be able to run
_any_ command as root. Please be careful when prepending sudo to a command.

Regards, Paul.
