Yes. You can upgrade from 4.30 to a later version either from a CD or over the 
internet.

I would recommend a staged upgrade rather than doing it all in one go. This 
should avoid any nasty little suprises - The first package to upgrade would 
be grub (make sure to run grub-install afterwards).. Before upgrading the 
kernel kernel, confirm that /dev/hda2 is mounted as / - The command `mount` 
should report back with "/dev/hda2 on / type ext3 (rw)"

If it says anything else (which it probably will do if you manually 
partitioned the disk during installation), you MUST check /boot/grub/menu.lst 
- There is a line that reads:

# kopt=root=/dev/hda2 ro splash=silent vga=788

Edit that one line with what ever mount reported root as and you will be able 
to reboot without problem after upgrading the kernel. If menu.lst and mount 
disagree and you upgrade the kernel, grub will barf on the next reboot.

Certainly is doable - I regularly update my main box over the internet without 
trouble (or rather, from a mirror maintained behind a firewall).
