2.6.12.6-magma+bdi.102 is an old, outdated build. Please upgrade to 
2.6.12.6-rtai or 2.6.16-rtai.

$ apt-file search quickstep
emc: usr/local/emc/quickstep.ini
emc-modules-2.6.12.6-rtai: lib/modules/2.6.12.6-rtai/extra/quickstep.ko
emc-modules-2.6.16-rtai: lib/modules/2.6.16-rtai/extra/quickstep.ko

Either build is suitable as both are generated from the same emc-1.0-40 
tarball.

As for the "ringing" - Insufficient information supplied. Need PERIOD 
settings, CPU speed, and chipset. From the sounds of it, I would suspect 
resonance in the drive & steppers rather than a software problem. An 
oscilloscope would be about the only way to confirm this.
