1. You can save a life
A cab driver can save a customer time by getting them somewhere faster than they would walking or taking public transportation. A tax preparer can save someone money by finding all possible deductions on a customer's return. Those are important services that will always be in demand, but they don't compare with a nurse, who can save someone's life.

2. Flexible schedules
Not all of us want to work the standard 9-5. While nurses often must take less coveted shifts when they first start working at a new hospital, in many cases nurses can craft schedules that fit their lives. However, those who do prefer a traditional work schedule can find what they're looking for while working at a clinic or physician's office.

3. The ability to travel
There are slight differences in the requirements from state to state in terms of licensing and continuing education, but they it's hardly like practicing law in one state or another. Nurses can easily transition their skills to work in medical facilities of all kinds, all across the country. And with a nursing shortage throughout the country, it's feasible to move from one city to another and have very little trouble finding a job.

4. Nursing helps keep you in shape
Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, walking, even running ??? nurses handle more physical chores than most professions because it's the furthest thing from a desk job. While most white collar workers spend eight hours (or more) in a chair each day, that's hardly the case for nurses, who don't know the meaning of the word "sedentary" while on a shift.

5. Nurses can do many different things during their careers
With several degrees and licenses available, and even more specialties one can focus on, there's plenty of ways to keep one's nursing career diversified and challenging.

6. Nurses can receive all sorts of benefits
Whether it's vacation time, free or discounted medical treatments or professional development programs, hospitals offer benefits to nurses that can't be discounted when looking at an offer letter. And several hospitals offer benefits like early retiree medical benefits and/or 401k plans.

7. Job security
While a shortage of nurses also includes a shortage in nursing faculty that makes getting into nursing school a tad difficult, the shortage of available nurses is great for current nurses in terms of high job security. According to the BLS, nursing jobs are growing faster than the average for all other occupations, and opportunities are expected to be "excellent."
