BT and Talk Talk lose file-sharing appeal The internet service providers (ISPs) had argued the UK's Digital Economy Act was incompatible with EU law. The Act will mean ISPs will have to send warning letters to alleged illegal file downloaders, as well as potentially cutting users off. The creative industry argues that piracy costs £400m a year in lost revenue. Tech Groups Propose Changes to TPP to Promote Internet Freedom At this week’s Melbourne round of TPP negotiations, the Computers and Communications Industry Association (CCIA) — representing tech companies like Google, Facebook, E-Bay and Yahoo — has been circulating a new proposal for adding copyright limitations and exceptions to “permit the smooth functioning of the Internet.” It is incredibly well researched and supported and includes some good ideas.[Leer más] <http://derechosdigitales.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3534bbf5090c82267e125812f&id=d97297a88a&e=4b85d57f50>. The Bright Side of Being Hacked Despite the arrests of dozens of suspected members of Anonymous and its offshoots worldwide, it is far from diminished. Nor have most of its corporate targets been irreparably damaged by the attacks. Rather, what Anonymous has done, experts said at the big RSA computer security conference here last week, is raise the alarm about the unguarded state of corporate computer systems.[Leer más] <http://derechosdigitales.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3534bbf5090c82267e125812f&id=dfe99d174e&e=4b85d57f50>. 'Irish Sopa' legislation passed despite robust opposition The Irish government has passed into law controversial copyright legislation that internet freedom groups have called a new form of censorship. Seán Sherlock, the Labour minister for research and innovation, signed the legislation to amend copyright law in Ireland. Opposition to the legislation – called by critics the "Irish Sopa" after the US Stop Online Piracy Act – has been robust. Ireland is a major global hub for companies such as Google and Facebook, which are among the biggest employers in Dublin, and some in the hi-tech industry believe the changes could curb the growth of online business in the Republic.[Leer más] <http://derechosdigitales.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3534bbf5090c82267e125812f&id=87402b91ce&e=4b85d57f50>. *COLUMNAS* Jane C. Ginsburg: Do Treaties Imposing Mandatory Exceptions to Copyright Violate International Copyright Norms? Because further treaties designed to limit the scope of copyright protection may be in the offing,3 it is appropriate to step back from the particular issues confronting the visually impaired to consider more broadly whether treaties imposing mandatory exceptions and limitations, whatever their substantive objectives, are in fact compatible with member states’ obligations under the Berne Convention and the reinforcement of these obligations through the TRIPs Accord. Careful examination of the structure and policies underlying the Berne Convention suggests a fundamental tension between that Convention’s norms and treaties whose goal is to limit the scope of copyright. Michael Gesit: Closing Time on C-11: Help Stop the Final Push for SOPA-Style Reforms & Efforts to Gut Fair Dealing The long road of Canadian copyright reform is nearing an end as the Bill C-11 committee concluded hearing from witnesses yesterday and indicated that it will begin a "clause-by-clause" review of the bill starting on Monday. While there will still be some additional opportunities for debate - third reading in the House of Commons, Senate review - the reality is that next week's discussion will largely determine the future of Canadian copyright law. Cory Doctorow: Censorship is inseparable from surveillance We can't do that at the same time as we are nationally discounting the value of all private internet information to zero. We can't tell people to value their privacy and treat it as valueless. Well, we can, but only if we don't actually care about the harms that can arise from privacy breaches. Only if we want to make "people don't care about privacy" into our national mission-statement.[Leer Más] <http://derechosdigitales.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=3534bbf5090c82267e125812f&id=adcf13d45a&e=4b85d57f50>. Juan Carlos Tous: ¡Espabilemos!
