English version: Richard M. Stallman, initiator of the free software movement, founder of the GNU project (1984) and of the Free Software Foundation (1985), will be the featured speaker at the conference The Free Software Movement and the GNU/Linux Operating System to be held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Law of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), on Friday August 20, at 10:00 a.m. Stallman will speak about the goals and philosophy of the Free Software Movement, and the status and history of the GNU operating system, which in combination with the kernel Linux is now used by twenty of million of users world-wide. He will also explain how software patents obstruct software development. Stallman has said that "software patents are patents that cover software ideas. They restrict the development of software, so that every design decision brings a risk of getting sued. Patents in other fields restrict factories, but software patents restrict every computer user. Economic research shows that they even retard progress". The event is being organized jointly by the Faculty of Sciences and Engineering of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú and CPSR-Peru, the Peruvian chapter of Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility. The conference will be relayed by webcasting(**). The purpose of the conference is to encourage the dissemination of knowledge about free software, provide an opportunity for people to exchange ideas and experiences in GNU/Linux as a technological, reliable, powerful and economic alternative, and to promote the development of FLOSS in Peru. With that goal in mind, Stallman (www.stallman.org) will be in our country after touring around Bolivia and Argentina, where he is participating in several conferences, meeting with the Argentine Minister of Education, Dr. Daniel Filmus, and receiving an honorary doctorate granted by the University of Salta. In Peru Stallman will also participate in the XII Students National Congress of Engineering and Systems - CONEIS (http://www.xiiconeis.unmsm.edu.pe) and will also speak in the city of Arequipa (http://www.aqpglug.org/). The Free Software Foundation says that the software is free/libre when you have: - The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0); - The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs. Access to the source code as a precondition for this (freedom 1); - The freedom to redistribute copies to others (freedom 2); - The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits. Access to the source code is a precondition for this (freedom 3). Richard Stallman is the principal author of the GNU Compiler Collection, a portable optimizing compiler which was designed to support diverse architectures and multiple languages. The compiler now supports over 30 different architectures and 7 programming languages. Stallman also wrote the GNU symbolic debugger (gdb), GNU Emacs, and various other GNU programs. Stallman graduated from Harvard in 1974 with a BA in physics. During his college years, he also worked at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, developing operating systems. He resigned that position in January 1984 to begin GNU Project. In 1999, Dr. Stallman received the annual Norbert Wiener Award from Computer for Professionals Social Responsibility - CPSR (http://www.cpsr.org).
