there Is to get. No Scotchman is going to cheat Theodore Alden out of what's his. Soon's I'd made up my mind to that, I drove over to Olmsted and made arrangements to sail from New York on Saturday." "Saturday? Why that's only three days off!" protested Mrs. Alden. "Well, it'll only take a night and part of a day to get to New York. That'll give you a day and a half to get ready, ma." The thought of a trip to Scotland delighted Mrs. Alden, and she immediately began to plan how she could get the boys, her husband and herself ready in such a short space of time. But Larry and Tom showed no signs of enthusiasm. Noticing their silence, their father exclaimed: "Don't you boys want to go? I never knew you so quiet before when a trip was mentioned." "But the ball game with Husted is on Saturday," said Larry, giving voice to the thought uppermost in his mind. Then, as though he realized that it was foolish to compare a trip to Scotland with a game of baseball, he added: "Besides, Tom and I were planning--that is, we were going to ask you if we couldn't go out to Tolopah and spend the summer with Horace and Bill Wilder on their ranch." With this announcement of a plan which the brothers had discussed over and over, wondering how they could bring it about, the boys anxiously watched their father's face. "So that's how the wind blows, eh?" he commented. "Well, ma, what do you say? Shall we take the boys with us or let them go to the ranch?" With her quiet mother's eye Mrs. Alden caught the appeal on her sons' faces and after a short deliberation replied: "I think they'd be better off with the Wilders--that is, if they'd like to have the boys visit them." "Hooray! hooray!" cried the boys together. "We can telegraph and ask Mr. Wilder tonight," said Larry. "Can we go to Bramley and send the message, father?" "You can telephone the message to the station and the operator will send it." And while the boys puzzled over the wording of the telegram, their father re-read his letter from Scotland. "I've got the telegram ready," Tom exclaimed presently. "Listen." And picking

F-sacrificing devotion is perfectly admirable; but what is more admirable still is the way in which she conceals the suffering that she endures from her parents. Noble-hearted girl! she is calm and silent, but she has always been so. She has grown thinner, and perhaps her cheek is a trifle paler, but her forehead was burning and seemed to scorch my lips as I kissed her. With this exception, however, there was nothing else about her that would betray her tortures. Modeste, her maid, told me, moreover, that when night came she seemed utterly worn out, and the poor g

Laughed. "'I've give Betty Blackleg,' he said. 'I've got tired of him.'" Betty's disappointment showed in her eyes; she had suspected that Calumet had had another reason. She had hoped-- "I reckon, though, that that wasn't his real reason," continued Dade; "he wasn't showin' all of his hand there." "What makes you think that?" asked Betty, trying not to blush. "Well," said Dade, "I was walkin' round the stable a while ago, just nosin' around without any purpose, an' walkin' slow. When I got to the corner, not makin' any noise, I saw Calumet standin' in front of the stable door, talkin'. There was nobody around him--nothin' but Blackleg, an' so I reckon he was talkin' to Blackleg. Sure enough he was. He puts his head up against Blackleg's head, an' he said, soft an' low, kinda: "'Blackleg,' he said; 'I've give you away. I hated like poison to do it, but I reckon Betty'll look a heap better on you than she does on that skate she rode today. Damn that black devil!' he said, 'I wouldn't have took the job of breakin' him for any other woman in the world.' "I come away then," concluded Dade; "for somehow I didn't want him to know there was anybody around to hear him." Betty got up quickly and went out on the porch. She stood there, looking out into the darkness for a long, long time, and presently Dade grew tired of waiting for her and went to his room. CHAPTER XIX A TRAGEDY IN THE TIMBER GROVE The black was undoubtedly broken. His subsequent actions proved that. He did not become docile by any means, but he was tractable, which is to say that he did as he was bidden with a minimum of urging; he was intelligent, divining, and learned quickly. Also, he respected his
