En and women; a Nation of wholesome homes, realizing the best ideals; a Nation whose power is glorified by its justice and whose justice is the conscience of scores of millions of God-fearing people--that is the Nation the people need and want. And that is the Nation they shall have. For never doubt that we Americans will make good the real meaning of our institutions. Never doubt that we will solve, in righteousness and wisdom, every vexing problem. Never doubt that in the end, the hand from above that leads us upward will prevail over the hand from below that drags us downward. Never doubt that we are indeed a Nation whose God is the Lord. And, so, never doubt that a braver, fairer, cleaner America surely will come; that a better and brighter life for all beneath the flag surely will be achieved. Those who now scoff soon will pray. Those who now doubt soon will believe. Soon the night will pass; and when, to the Sentinel on the ramparts of Liberty the anxious ask: "Watchman, what of the night?" his answer will be "Lo, the morn appeareth." Knowing the price we must pay, the sacrifice we must make, the burdens we must carry, the assaults we must endure--knowing full well the cost--yet we enlist, and we enlist for the war. For we know the justice of our cause, and we know, too, its certain triumph. Not reluctantly then, but eagerly, not with faint hearts but strong, do we now advance upon the enemies of the people. For the call that comes to us is the call that came to our fathers. As they responded so

W kind of pie," said Daddy Brown. "Never mind, there are some cakes and cookies." "Oh, dear!" cried Sue, and there were tears in her eyes. "I did so want my mince pie to be nice!" "It was good," said Tom. "The crust is the best I ever ate, and the pickled insides will go good on the fish." Everybody laughed at that, and even Sue smiled. "Next time smell your mince-meat before you put it in a pie," said Mrs. Brown. "Otherwise your pie would have been perfect, Sue." "I will," promised the little girl. Tom became a regular member of Camp Rest-a-While, sleeping in a tent by himself. And he proved so useful, cutting wood, going on errands and even helping with the cooking, that Mrs. Brown said she wondered how she had ever got along without him. He was given some of Uncle Tad's old clothes, that seemed to fit him very well, so he could no longer be called the "ragged boy," and he went in swimming so often, often taking Bunny and Sue along, that all three were as "clean as whistles," Mrs. Brown said. No word had been heard from Mr. Bixby about his missing helper, but Mr. Brown had not given up making inquiries about the "needles." Bunny and Sue missed their electric playthings, but their father brought them other toys from the city with which they had great fun. But still Bunny wished for his electric train, and Sue for her wonderful Teddy bear. One night, just after supper, Mrs. Brown discovered that she needed milk to set some bread for baking in the morning. "I'll go and get it to the farmhouse," said Tom. "And may I go, too?" asked Bunny. It was decided that he could, as it was not late, only dark. So down the dusky road trudged Bunny and Tom, with Splash running along beside them. As it happened, the farmhouse where they usually got the milk had none left, so they had to go on to the next one, which was quite near the edge of the Indian village. "But they won't any of 'em be

Y, ugly-visaged black who had been whipped, by Madam P----'s order, the day before. "Sam," said his master, "I shall be gone some days, and I leave the field-work in your hands. Let me have a good account of you when I return." "Yas, massa, you shill dat," replied the negro. "Put Jule--Sam's Jule--into the woods, and see that she does full tasks," continued the Colonel. "Haint she wanted 'mong de nusses, massa?" "Put some one else there--give her field-work; she needs it." On large plantations the young children of the field-women are left with them only at night, and are herded together during the day, in a separate cabin, in charge of nurses. These nurses are feeble, sickly women, or recent mothers; and the fact of Jule's being employed in that capacity was evidence that she was unfit for outdoor labor. Madam P----, who was waiting on the piazza to see us off, seemed about to remonstrate against this arrangement, but she hesitated a moment, and in that moment we had bidden her "Good-bye," and galloped away. We were soon at the cabin of the negro-hunter, and the coachman, dismounting, called him out. "Hurry up, hurry up," said the Colonel, as Sandy appeared, "we haven't a moment to spare." "Jest so--jest so, Cunnel; I'll jine ye in a jiffin," replied he of the reddish extremities. Emerging from the shanty with provoking deliberation--the impatience of my host had infected me--the clay-eater slowly proceeded to mount the horse of the negro, while his dirt-bedraggled wife, and clay-encrusted children, followed close at his heels, the younger ones huddling around for the tokens of paternal affection usual at parting. Whether it was the noise they made, or their frightful aspect, I know not, but the horse, a spirited animal, took fright on their appearance, and nearly broke away from the negro, who was holding him. Seeing this, the Colonel said: "Clear out, you young scare-crows. Into the house with you." "Th

Ach him a homily upon a wasted life, or upon a career cut off in the middle, destroyed by an act of brutal passion, but he did not do so. Perhaps there was something in Paul's face which forbade him. Perhaps he almost feared the scornful smile which was on Paul's lips, and the steady look in his eyes. A painful silence followed, a silence of nearly a minute, and then the judge pronounced his sentence. "You will be taken from this place to the place from whence you came, and from there to the place of execution, and there you will be hanged by the neck until you

expand in proportion, while their present-giving instincts often remain in the undeveloped condition of their earlier days. Something showy and not-too-expensive in a shop is their only conception of the ideal gift. That is why even quite good shops have their counters and windows crowded with things worth about four shillings that look as if they might be worth seven-and-six, and are priced at ten shillings and labelled seasonable gifts.'" "I know," said Suzanne; "that is why it is so risky to be vague when one is giving indications of one's wants. Now if I say to him
