Dear Friend, Acquaintance, Relative, or Person-who-somehow-ended-up in my address book,

I am writing to you to announce the publication by The New Press of a brand new book I co-edited with Victor Pickard, *Will the Last Reporter Please Turn Out the Lights: The Collapse of Journalism and What Can Be Done to Fix It*.

The book includes 32 new essays on the crisis of journalism in the United States, written by leading scholars, journalists, activists and policymakers. The essays cover a broad range of approaches to the topic and viewpoints and offer an equally broad range of prospective solutions. The pieces are all written since 2008 and mostly in 2010, and include considerable ground-breaking research and analysis. A few were published in magazines or journals, but most were commissioned and written specifically for this volume. I have three essays in the book, two I wrote with John Nichols, and another, on Walter Lippmann, I wrote specifically for this book.

We have put together a Hall of Fame line-up. Since many of them are terrific writers, the book is a great read. The contributors include (in alphabetical order):

Craig Aaron * Bruce Ackerman * Eric Alterman * C. Edwin Baker * Yochai Benkler * Rodney Benson * Frank Blethen * Ryan Blethen * Jessica Clark * Mark Cooper * FCC Commissioner Michael J. Copps * Geoffrey Cowan * Michael X. Delli Carpini * Leonard Downie, Jr. * Thomas Frank * Todd Gitlin * Juan Gonzalez * James T. Hamilton * Chris Hedges * Janine Jackson * Robert W. McChesney * Laura McGann * Pamela Newkirk * John Nichols * Victor Pickard * Shawn Powers * Michael Schudson * Clay Shirky * David Simon * Paul Starr * Joseph Torres * Nikki Usher * Tracy Van Slyke * Matt Welch * David Westphal * Bruce A. Williams

The New Press is a non-profit publisher in every sense of the term, so I am assisting their publicity efforts by sending this email to you. If this does not interest you, I apologize for the nuisance.

The first wave of reviews is already in. *Booklist* wrote: “This provocative compilation provides a groundbreaking introduction to, and thought-provoking evaluation of, the uncertain state of contemporary journalism. Bold, meditative, engrossing, this is an indispensable guide for followers of modern media.”

The *Library Journal* concluded: “Anyone concerned with the state of journalism and the state of the union should read this thought-provoking book.”

If you are interested in purchasing the book, please consider supporting your local independent bookstore. In Madison, I support Rainbow Bookstore. http://www.rainbowbookstore.org/node/11832

Thanks for your time,

PS--My dear friend and frequent co-author John Nichols has a new book out from Verso called* The S Word: A Short History of an American Tradition….Socialism*. It is a fantastic book that has received rave reviews. Everyone I know who has picked up a copy has read it virtually in one sitting it was so engrossing. That was my experience, too. Because John has been so busy covering the Wisconsin 2011 uprising, he has not has the opportunity to do the promotional work this book richly deserves.
