The word itself is about a century old, and the meaning has actually been in almost continual flux.* On top of that, there’s debate about whether empathy is a good and useful feeling that can help us move toward a kinder and more just world, or whether it’s actually counterproductive. The word was first used in German as “einfühlung” or in-feeling around the turn of the last century. It was used in the context of aesthetics, an area of philosophy. “It was about ‘feeling into’ things, like forms and shapes and art objects,” said Susan Lanzoni, a science and medicine historian based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and author of Empathy: A History. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=f978f4395f&e=03262185a4> Center for Empathy and Visual Arts Minneapolis Institute of Art Karleen Gardner <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=8bbd44b0fa&e=03262185a4> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=d686322c82&e=03262185a4> >From cultureofempathy.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=dcff2b2206&e=03262185a4> - January 11, 9:30 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=cc4e7c52a5&e=03262185a4> Mia envisions taking a leading role in collaborating with museum colleagues as well as researchers, scholars, content experts, and other influencers to research and explore practices for fostering empathy and global awareness through the power of art and to share these findings with the field. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=d371f1b924&e=03262185a4> Bridging Political Divides with Empathy Circles (2019-01-19) <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=c8cffa5277&e=03262185a4> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=a0d0528e29&e=03262185a4> >From www.empathycircle.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=f82ab92936&e=03262185a4> - January 10, 2:14 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=f610bf5ee7&e=03262185a4> Every Saturday, 10 AM – 12 PM PSTEveryone (left, center, right, etc) is invited to this free online Empathy Circle An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process. It is about increasing our capacity for empathy so that when triggered we can overcome the body's natural "fight-flight-freeze" reaction. They are fully present with others.Empathetic people have a way of making you feel like you're the only one in the room. When they interact with someone, they give that person the gift of their full attention and respect, which is rare in today's hyper-distracted world. 2. They've mastered the art of active listening. 3. They tune into nonverbal communication. 4. They pause. 5. They replace advice-giving with asking questions. 6. They speak in terms of "we," not "me." 7. They imagine others' point of view. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=c894a47998&e=03262185a4> EmpathyCircle.com - Bridging Political Divides with Empathy Circles <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=eb5597ca00&e=03262185a4> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=e18e93c191&e=03262185a4> >From www.empathycircle.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=df1cd0e9d2&e=03262185a4> - January 11, 9:21 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7b42e0b42e&id=589086aefb&e=03262185a4> An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process. This is a retention strategy that doesn’t take long because the nervous system is emotionally reading others hundreds of times per second.Empathetic leaders avoid judgments about drama and instead identify the emotions within. By shifting the focus from the attention-getting facts to the heart of the matter, employees internalize your authenticity, which evokes maturity and belonging. Belonging is crucial to motivation. Some schools may not teach it yet. Others may teach it as early as elementary schools. Some even give it a shot in middle schools and high schools. * But why is empathy important to teach? Isn’t it something that people are just born having? And if you do have to teach it, how can you teach a soft skill that's so conceptual and non-concrete? In this blog post, we’ll answer all of those questions so you can start teaching empathy tomorrow! Now that you’re motivated to teach empathy, let’s lighten the mood with some awesome empathy lesson plans! 1. Developing Empathy (Teaching Tolerance) 2.
