Will Sopa / Acta / ... make Onion Routing Illegal ? http://thehackernews.com/2011/12/tor-anonymity-will-become-illegal-with.html /// My ISP ( internet service provider , here in Belgium ) already blocked access to certain sites. When asking the ISP - via email - about such blockage via email, telling them that a recent european court of justice decision limits a national court in the possibility to force an ISP to censor its customers in the name of copyright http://www.laquadrature.net/en/eu-court-of-justice-censorship-in-name-of-cop... my ISP replied saying that they block it "voluntarily", in preparation of what may come. I also noticed another site blocked via my ISP http://www.artofhosting.org/home/ ( harvesting conversations - direct democracy practices ? ) * * and reported it to my ISP - I recently noticed they unblocked it. ( Note : I found out the site was blocked to me as I use TOR to route around it, using another IP ) I also asked my ISP for a complete list of censored sites - they did not reply to this question. hi franco,
can you cover this in blog? important, see http://falkvinge.net/2011/12/01/mafiaafire-just-killed-all-current-and-futur...
In the hypothetical extreme case that some United States goon agency would seize the domain *thepiratebay.org* entirely, most ISPs also lying about its previous DNS records and giving you a “page censored” sign, and even having blocked it at the IP level (a technique never used), you would still just type “thepiratebay.org” in the address bar as usual (given that you also have the first MafiaaFire plugin).
The story on TorrentFreak goes into detail on how this is accomplished using a list of thousands and thousands of proxies, circumventing censorship. Essentially, what the released plugin does is to turn your computer into a node in a mesh network that finds the shortest unblocked route to the target you request. *This kills the copyright industry’s strategy that the ISPs are “critical gatekeepers” right dead in the water.*
