Saving Desktop Settings?
Please, is there a way to save the desktop settings? Every time I login, I have to reset my resolutions all over again. I'm just about ready to give up on Musix from all the configuration hassles. =( __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Yes, it depends on wath kind of settings do you mean... xorg: mv /usr/sbin/mkxf86config /usr/sbin/mkxf86config-disabled GTK: gtk-theme-switch KDE: kcontrol
Every time I login, I have to reset my resolutions all over again.
mv /usr/sbin/mkxf86config /usr/sbin/mkxf86config-disabled
I'm just about ready to give up on Musix from all the configuration hassles. =(
Well, that would be sad

Hi Marcos, Well.. I tried everything. Here are the results: mv /usr/sbin/mkxf86config /usr/sbin/mkxf86config-disabled Even after this, the resolution continues to reset. It is not dependant upon a reboot. I simply have to logout and then login and my resolution has reset to 1600x1200 from 1280x1024. This is consistent. I believe that Kcontrol is not saving the configuration for the monitor. I don't know what to do at this point. gtk-theme-switch I ran this and hit apply. Still, some programs had tiny fonts. I really think there is something wrong with Kcontrol. I'm using IceWM-English version. I tried it in the Spanish version though and it was the same effect. I really don't understand how it sets my resolution to 1600x1200 when I deleted the entries in xorg.conf for that resolution and renamed mkxf86config. Very odd. Do you have any further ideas? Ok, the best way is go for the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, edit it and change the default resolution, as instance: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (...) Section "Screen" DefaultColorDepth 16 (...) SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1600x1200" EndSubSection (...) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
gtk-theme-switch
I ran this and hit apply. Still, some programs had tiny fonts.
Well, what apps have tiny fonts?
I really think there is something wrong with Kcontrol.
Kcontrol only works for KDE apps, like konqueror, rosegarden. GTK-switch 1 & 2 works for GTK apps, like Audacity, rox (it has it own config too), and other GTK apps. As instance, Kcontrol will not work for Ardour (it is GTK1 and it has its own config!)
I'm using IceWM-English version. I tried it in the Spanish version though and it was the same effect.
I really don't understand how it sets my resolution to 1600x1200 when I deleted the entries in xorg.conf for that resolution and renamed mkxf86config. Very odd.

Yes: Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf , and it must be like this: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- (...) Section "Screen" DefaultColorDepth 16 (...) SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1600x1200" EndSubSection (...) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Thank you for your time, Steven
Good luck!

Hello, Where can i find a tutorial to configuring the midisport interface under Musix? I noticed that the interface is not detected on boot, i need to unplug and reconnect the USB cable, then USB detects it. But as a 'unknown device'. So now i need to learn how to get it working in Musix/Rosegarden. I'm still working from the Live CD. Any hints are welcome! Mano. On 6/19/06, DCZX <[email protected]> wrote:

Hello, I used USB viewer (the USB link on the Admin desktop) when i loaded the USB viewer after boot it did not find the midisport 4x4. Though, when i unplugged the USB and reconnected then the unknown device showed up. Since i'm a newbie, keep in mind that i'm missing 99,99% of understanding what i'm doing. (I just want to make music in a low budget situation) I did modprob snd-usb-audio I now used the PCinfo tool and there it does mention the midisport, but none of the LED's on the interface light up, and in Rosegarden or other apps i can't find any Midi In/Out to select. Could it be i misunderstand how to select a midi input in linux (due to microsoft brainwash)? Mano. On 6/19/06, Marcos Guglielmetti <[email protected]> wrote:

Thx, today i'm learning things! But in this screen https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/images/3/34/Rosegarden-gestionar-timidity.jpg i expect to find 4 midisport ins and outs but somehow i can't get them to show. Due to the gina firmware questions i started looking for midisport firmware and on sourceforge i found midisport firmware loader 1.2. Is that what you use in Musix aswell? http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=87777&package_id=92666 Thats what i found at the Demudi site. Or does this cause GPL issues? This is consistent. I believe that Kcontrol is not saving the configuration for the monitor. I don't know what to do at this point.
gtk-theme-switch
I ran this and hit apply. Still, some programs had tiny fonts.
Thank you for your time, Steven

Yuck, this licence stuff silly... hehe Well I own a midisport so i hope to be able to use it....I can understand that you don't have one, but whoy should you not be able to include the files (since only the people who bought the hardware can actually USE the drivers, so the the manufacturor got payed for it. And paying twice would be a bit strange. What i don't understan is why ALSA states on the site that the midisport 4x4 (and also the GINA) is supported, ALSA is under GNU GPL, so i asumed that if you install ALSA that all the suported hardware should work without adding external files. Then something else, the midisport should be a USB 'class compliant' device the hardware should be build by the rules in this document http://www.usb.org/developers/devclass_docs/midi10.pdf So any driver build for this purpose should be able to communicate to the hardware without any firmware needs. Other hardware (like steinberg midex) uses a diffrent hardware plan not compliant to these specs, and they don't release information on how it is build. So for those devices it's impossible to create drivers. Back to ALSA... then again i say the ALSA driver should be able to communicate with the midisport 4x4 based on the info i just gave you (That is.... If i understand it the right way) also look on this page http://www.ferventsoftware.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&... same story and a direct reference to ALSA I hope this does not draw you away from your work to much... if it does then please say so. I ran this and hit apply. Still, some programs had tiny fonts.
Thank you for your time, Steven

From JACK Control, see the MIDI Tab!
Or
From Rosegarden, see:

But as a 'unknown device'. So now i need to learn how to get

I'm still working from the Live CD.
See: http://alsa.opensrc.org/usb-audio
Did you loaded the usb audio module?
In a terminal window, type:
modprobe snd-usb-audio
We had not added it to:

(updated, now)
If you have any succes, just tell as please!

I agree... but where do i look when it doesn't work?
Into the ALSA matrix: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=All#matrix
In PCinfo the Midisport is listed but in Rosegarden i can't find it.
Mmmm.... if it hasn't the firmware, it will not work, unless it's USB Audio Quattro, Duo, or MidiSport 2x4
Where can i check if ALSA is aware of the midisport,
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=All#matrix
and what file does rosegarden use to configure it's midi I/O.
I dont know about the file for Rosegarden, it's configuration is done by the menu
This is what i don't understand at the moment. ...I want to know to many things at once, and i try to close in to midi issue's.
i'm going to dig trough the txt files again.

Marcos, The firmware is indeed not distributable and is is essential for the midisport to work. So the hardware will not be able to work with a distro on live CD 'out of the box'. BUT, would it be possible to add the needed files AFTER burning the ISO? For instance that i can add a folder named /firmware/midiman/midisport4x4 where i can place the firmware files from this package http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/ I know it is a bit odd and i have no idea how it affects the Musix distro, but it would give more people the oppertunity to try Musix and enable them to use the CD 'on the go' without the need to buy more hardware. anyway, i'm going to figure out how to proceed, i want to learn these packages and make music, most important part is a midi input and a low latency reaction from a softsynth. can this be done with a basic soundblaster thing? Or do those cards have too much latency just like running under windows? Quiet a big step back on quality, but i have to find a realistic way to get started. Mano.

Yes, for now! We will try to make it GPL in some way (talking to the owners or rewriting)
BUT, would it be possible to add the needed files AFTER burning the ISO?
No, at least for a begginer: you have to remaster all the CD, and, for that, you need a working GNU+Linux distro and many things in your head :D
For instance that i can add a folder named /firmware/midiman/midisport4x4 where i can place the firmware files from this package http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/
It's not necesary to do that, you can compile things from the CD, but we dont encourage the people to use non-free software, in this case we need help to talk with Midiman, dont you think? You a re a midiman products user, ¿could you talk with them?

Or do those cards have too much latency just like running under windows?
Mmm... 23ms, or 11ms, or 5ms, it depends on your hardware config, you could go for 1.6ms too

Ok
So the hardware will not be able to work with a distro on live CD 'out of the box'.
I know it is a bit odd and i have no idea how it affects the Musix distro, but it would give more people the oppertunity to try Musix and enable them to use the CD 'on the go' without the need to buy more hardware.
anyway, i'm going to figure out how to proceed, i want to learn these packages and make music, most important part is a midi input and a low latency reaction from a softsynth. can this be done with a basic soundblaster thing?
Sure: I do!
Or do those cards have too much latency just like running under windows?
Mmm... 23ms, or 11ms, or 5ms, it depends on your hardware config, you could go for 1.6ms too
Quiet a big step back on quality, but i have to find a realistic way to get started.
Sure
Mano.

apt-get install ez-usb-firmwares

"The firmware is known to support the following hardware: - MidiSportUNO (Midiman) : operational (= 1x1) - MidiSport1x1 (Midiman) : operational - MidiSport2x2 (Midiman) : operational - USB-2-MIDI (Steinberg) : operational (= 2x2) - MidiSport4x4 (Midiman) : first two ports operational, no leds, work in progress - MidiSport8x8 (Midiman) : unknown, perhaps like 4x4 "
Please, test it!
How did I builded it?
https://www.musix.org.ar/wiki/index.php/EZ-USB
apt-get install sdcc
apt-get install sgmltools-lite
apt-get install sgml2x
ln -sf /usr/bin/sgmltools /usr/bin/sgml2html
wget -c http://ufpr.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/linux-hotplug/firmwarehotplug-0.1...
tar xvfz firmwarehotplug-0.1.tar.gz
cd firmwarehotplug-0.1/ezusb/midi/original
Edit this file: ezusb/midi/original/Makefile Change sgml2latex --output=ps $< to:
sgmltools -b ps $<
So, now you can build the package:
make
make install
Then you can make a deb package using chekinstall -si -D

it's allright, it must be installed now. All those errors are related to non 100& installed kernel and kernel modules (sorry!), but that's not a problem to install new software into the live-cd Now you must have the firmware into /usr/share/usb/ezusbmidi See that. Hi Sean, Somehow i think these midisports should work just fine, just a matter of finding out how to activate them.. ALSA reports on their site that the ALSA driver supports all midisports. http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/index.php?vendor=All#matrix I just can't find a good reference on the alsy site to confirm any of them working. (but i think many people are using them) :-) ALSA is GNU GPL and they are one of the first (if not THE FIRST) who programmed Linux audio drivers. So when they say midisport is supported, then i asume that it is ok to use any hardware on their list. For me it is time to learn how to config al this. And i just hope i don't cause to much confusion by explaining how i understand it so far. Please correct me if i'm wrong, i'm here to learn. Mano. On 6/20/06, Sean Edwards <[email protected]> wrote:

Ok
I did modprob snd-usb-audio
modprobe snd-usb-audio
I now used the PCinfo tool and there it does mention the midisport,
OH, yes? So, it must be running...
Could you send us the pcinfo.txt file?
OR: If you type into a terminal: "lsmod | grep usb" what does it shows?
but none of the LED's on the interface light up, and in Rosegarden or other apps i can't find any Midi In/Out to select.
From JACK Control, see the MIDI Tab!
Or
From Rosegarden, see:

Could it be i misunderstand how to select a midi

Something like this, but, it¡s easy, you will see :D

But as a 'unknown device'. So now i need to learn how to get it working in Musix/Rosegarden.
I'm still working from the Live CD.
See: http://alsa.opensrc.org/usb-audio
Did you loaded the usb audio module?
In a terminal window, type:
modprobe snd-usb-audio
We had not added it to:

(updated, now)
If you have any succes, just tell as please!

From midisport-firmware-1.2.tar.gz README: "What's this? ------------ This package allows you to use the MidiSport USB MIDI interfaces from M-Audio/Midiman with Linux. It sets up udev rules to automatically load the firmware into the device. Supported devices: - MidiSport 1x1 - MidiSport 2x2 - MidiSport 4x4 - MidiSport 8x8 - MidiSport Uno - Keystation - Oxygen - Radium (You don't need a firmware download for the USB Audio Quattro, Duo, or MidiSport 2x4.) The project page is <http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/>."

Ok
I did modprob snd-usb-audio
modprobe snd-usb-audio
I now used the PCinfo tool and there it does

OH, yes? So, it must be running...
Could you send us the pcinfo.txt file?
OR: If you type into a terminal: "lsmod | grep
usb" what does it shows?
but none of the LED's on the interface light up,
and in Rosegarden or
other apps i can't find any Midi In/Out to

From JACK Control, see the MIDI Tab!
Or
From Rosegarden, see:

Could it be i misunderstand how to select a midi

I noticed that the interface is not detected
on boot, i need to unplug

detects it.
What app detects it?
But as a 'unknown device'. So now i need to learn how to get
it working in
Musix/Rosegarden.
I'm still working from the Live CD.
See: http://alsa.opensrc.org/usb-audio
Did you loaded the usb audio module?
In a terminal window, type:
modprobe snd-usb-audio
We had not added it to:

(updated, now)
If you have any succes, just tell as please!

Y forgot something, you can allways try: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg But, before, make a backup cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.back cheers
Every time I login, I have to reset my resolutions all over again. I'm just about ready to give up on Musix from all the configuration hassles. =(
