Rers from some of the many islands which stud the coast. No other "labour" ship had ever been so far north, and Morel (the skipper) and I were keenly anxious to find a new ground. We had a fine vessel, with a high freeboard, a well-armed and splendid crew, and had no fear of being cut off by the natives. (I may here mention that I was grievously disappointed, for owing to the lack of a competent interpreter I failed to get a single recruit But in other respects the voyage was a success, for I did some very satisfactory trading business) After visiting many of the islands, we anchored in what is now named in the German charts Krauel Bay, on t

S the Phalarope, the females of which enjoy {47} an immunity from domestic duties that might cause the lady Hornbill many an envious sigh did she know of the freedom of her American sister. Mrs. Phalarope has no intention of being shut in with her eggs for a month while her mate goes roaming at large about the country, nor has she any idea of playing the part of the Georgia Mockingbird and bringing five-sixths of the food which the young require. Her method of procedure is first to permit her mate to search for a suitable nesting site. When some sheltered spot in the ground, quite to her liking, has been found she deposits the eggs and goes her way. Little companies of female Phalaropes may be seen at this time of the year frequenting the ponds and sloughs they inhabit. The dutiful and well-trained males are all at home, where they are responsible for the entire task of caring for, and incubating, the eggs. _Length of Mated Life._--The length of time which birds remain mated is a question often asked but seldom answered sa

D Bunny. "I am going to write a story in my book this very morning." So Bunny Rabbit ran back to the big stump. But he did not know just how to write a story. He had never written one before. He thought, and thought, and thought. Bobtail and Billy hopped up to see what their brother was doing. "Come down and play with us," said Bobtail. But Bunny shook his head, and shook his long ears. "Run away now," he said; "I am going to write a story." "What story are you going to write?" asked Billy. But Bunny did not answer. He had just thought of something funny. It was about the slide on the long hill beside the pond. And about the way Billy slid down,--right into the cold water. Bobtail and Billy ran away and left Bunny alone on the stump. Ho was very busy writing in his maple-leaf book. When he finished the story, he hid his book in the hollow tree. "No one will find it there," he said to himself, as he hopped off toward home. "I'll write a story every day until the book is full." But one day I went walking in the woods. I found the hollow tree, and I found the little maple-leaf book. "Bunny Rabbit's Diary" was the name of the book. It was all full of stories about the three little rabbits that lived in the woods. BILLY'S SLIDE I One morning in winter Bunny opened his eyes, just as the big round sun peeped up from behind the hills. He jumped up and shook himself. Then he pulled Bobtail's long ears to wake him up. Bobtail rolled out of bed, and that waked Billy. "Oh, I am so sleepy

Eep and awful vengeance for the past. Beware of the grandchild of Zenith, the gypsy--beware, Olivia, for yourself and your son!" "Is this all?" Olivia said, in a constrained, hard voice. "All I have to say to you--the rest is for Everard. My son, on the night of your birth an Eastern astrologer came to this house and cast your horoscope. He gave that horoscope to me at day-dawn and departed, and from that hour to this I have neither seen nor heard of him. Before reading your future in the stars he looked into my palm and told me the past--told me the story of Zenith and her wrongs--told me what no one under heaven but myself knew. My boy, the revelation of that night has blighted my life--broken my heart! The unutterable horror of your future has brought my gray hairs to the grave. Oh, my son! what will become of you when I am gone?" "What was it, papa?" the lad asked. "What has the future in store for me?" A convulsive spasm distorted the livid face; the eye-

His brethren--would fire off a point-blank pistol-shot of a question; when this was answered or evaded, they resumed their steady stare. I was lapsing rapidly into a helpless imbecility under the horrible fascination, when their mother summoned me to supper; they vanished then, with a derisive chuckle, to which they were certainly entitled: for they had utterly discomfited the stranger within their gates. One more long night-ride over steep, broken forest-ground--enlivened by certain ultra-marine reminiscences of my guide, who had been a sort of land-buccaneer in California--brought us to the farm, far in the bosom of the hills, where I found Shipley, buried in a deep sleep. The sole intelligence I heard that night related to the roan: the enfeebled constitution of that unlucky animal had given way under rough travel and wild weather; he was reported to be dying; hearing which
