Some cooks find themselves doubting, after serving a meal, whether their guests were truly content with the food, even if nobody voices a complaint. -=-=-=-= Personally, when I’m on the receiving end of a dish I don’t enjoy, I tend to keep quiet out of courtesy—I know the effort and care put into preparing it and wouldn’t want to bring discomfort to the chef. This sense of empathy often keeps even honest feedback unspoken. -=-=-=-= A friend I recall, who sadly passed last spring, couldn’t seem to master basic recipes. It’s uncomfortable to admit, but her dishes—especially pasta overcooked to the point of mush, chicken roasted for hours until unrecognizable, or watery, limp cabbage—rarely landed on the mark. She attempted rice many times, but it would often clump together or become so soft it was hard to distinguish from mashed potatoes. For her, following standard kitchen practice just never quite worked out. -=-=-=-= Still, in my circle, most friends who lack kitchen confidence are open and seek advice, sparking camaraderie instead of frustration. We each know who to call for help, and rally around those who ask. Addressing subpar meals isn't easy with acquaintances; usually my reaction is just to skip a second helping or gently set aside what I can’t finish without much fuss. In professional or fine dining circumstances, if feedback is requested, I’ll kindly offer specifics or leave the dish untouched and quietly move on. Over the years, I’ve found silence paired with subtle gestures communicates all one needs in such cases, helping keep feelings intact while avoiding unnecessary tension. Thank you for understanding both sides of the dining table—the challenge of preparing food and the art of responding with care.
