A minor theme vertical and circular pupil shapes benefit different animals. When the models pupil was horizontal, more light could be captured from the left and right of the eye, not surprisingly, and less light from below and above the eye. This would allow grazing animals to better predators approaching from different directions, the researchers said. People had been saying that the horizontal pupil helps expand the horizontal view of the ground, they just hadnt shown that, said Martin S. Banks, a visual scientist from Berkeley and lead author on the paper. Our contribution was to build a model and show that that happened. But there was an obvious caveat to this conclusion: What would happen if the sheep bent its head to the ground to eat? Logic would suggest that the horizontal pupil would become perpendicular to the ground.one another when.News | Sports | Finance | Weather <http://sunny.vidadier.xyz/rjuxdc/emjc1018itkgo/3CiGF84FTiK2dT1riTeSC2ej2jTDfRwuuX48odCiA84F4Q8oEdE2ezSr2driX4SlSXr2Xuui4SCEuuwRVVsRZfPRDfuuDDRwuuS3r8ET>they join together Part of their oppreBy the time Mr. Obama announced the regulations at the White House on Monday, the small group that had begun its work at the Chamber of Commerce had expanded into a vast network of lawyers and lobbyists ranging from state capitols to Capitol Hill, aided by Republican governors and congressional leaders. It is a question that has longed intrigued researchers, and a study of 214 species published Friday suggests the answer may be strongly linked to giving animals a survival edge: vertical pupils and circular pupils help certain predators hunt, while horizontal pupils help other species spot predators from afar. Not all scientists accept the researchers hypothesis, however, citing examples of animals that do not fit cleanly into these classifications. The research, which was conducted by a of scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, and Durham University in Britain, was published in the journal Science Advances. Some 560 former Peace Corps volunteers and three former Peace Corps country directors who worked in the Dominican Republic are calling for the United States to suspend funding to Dominican forces accused of committing human rights violations against Dominicans of Haitian descent. The letter to Secretary of State John Kerry documents abuses committed by some Dominican forces related to the country's revocation of citizenship of Dominicans born of undocumented immigrants, and a simultaneous crackdown on immigration from Haiti. ""Given the Dominican government's disregard for international law with respect to the status of its citizens of Haitian descent; the track of Dominican forces receiving funding and training from the United States; and the Dominican Forces' readiness to execute a potentially massive campaign of rights-violating expulsions, we ask that the United States suspend its military aid to the Dominican government," the letter states. The Dominican government has been under fire on two fronts involving Dominicans of Haitian descent and Haitian immigrants. A 2013 court case stripped the citizenship of tens of thousands of Dominicans who were born to undocumented Haitian parents, effectively rendering them stateless. At the same time, the Dominican government is cracking down on undocumented immigrants, the vast majority who came from Haiti. Both of these issues have been addressed by new laws aimed to restore citizenship or register for legal residence. But critics say both laws are flawed and that only a fraction of those affected have been able to benefit from the proposed solutions. A concern for international organizations is that a sudden influx of returnees to Haiti -- either voluntary or through deportation -- might overwhelm Haiti's capacity to take them in. A worst-case humanitarian crisis has not materialized, but the emergence of cities in southern Haiti indicate that a risk exists. Unprecedented action by ex-Peace Corps members Peace Corps members have used their experiences to lobby for political action in the past, but organizers say the scope of this letter to Kerry is unprecedented. The 560 signatories include volunteers dating back to the the inception of Peace Corps activities in the Dominican Republic in 1962. The letter argues for the State Department to use the Leahy amendment -- a law that allows for the withholding of U.S. aid to military forces engaged in human rights violations -- to target some Dominican units. The sway that a group of former Peace Corps volunteers will have is unclear, but one organizer behind the letter says the is to highlight the U.S. ties to the Dominican policies. "This is not a question of sovereignty (in the Dominican Republic)," Keane Bhatt, told CNN. "This is an issue that implicates the United States as well." Bhatt was a Peace Corps volunteer in Villa Altagracia, a community near Santo Domingo, from 2008 to 2010. Dominican government denies violations The Dominican government stands by its policies and rejects accusations of violations of international law or human rights law as falsehoods. Some human rights organizations estimate that as many as 200,000 Dominicans of Haitian descent were left stateless.
