Tement that he lost his breath for a brief period of time. "But Tom, Amasa Culpepper wasn't in our house that morning?" he objected. "Perhaps not, but Dock Phillips was, and he's a boy I'd hate to trust any further than I could see him," Tom agreed. "Do you think Mr. Culpepper could have hired Dock to _steal_ the paper?" continued the sorely-puzzled Carl. "Well, hardly that. If Dock took it he did the job on his own responsibility. Perhaps he had a chance to glance at the paper and find out what it stood for, and in his cunning way figured that he might hold his employer up for a good sum

and fellows of that high order, are in the habit of indulging in this propensity upstairs in the billiard-rooms of the 'Sarcophagus'--and, partly to make their acquaintance, partly from a natural aptitude for crime, Sackville Maine followed them, and became an adept in the odious custom. Where it is introduced into a family I need not say how sad the consequences are, both to the furniture and the morals. Sackville smoked in his dining-room at home, and caused an agony to his wife and mother-in-law which I do not venture to describe. He then became a professed BILLIARD-PLAYER, wasting hours upon hours at that amusement; betting freely, playing tolerably, losing awfully to Captain Spot and Col. Cannon. He played matches of a hundred games with these gentlemen, and would not only continue until four or five o'clock in the morning at this work, but would be found at the Club of a forenoon, indulging himself to the detriment of his business, the ruin of his health, and the neglect of his wife. From billiards to whist is but a step--and when a man gets to whist and five pounds on a rubber, my opinion is, that it is all up with him. How was the coal business to go on, and the connection of the firm to be kept up, and the senior partner always at the card-table? Consorting now with genteel persons and Pall Mall bucks, Sackville became ashamed of his snug little residence in Kennington Oval, and transported his family to Pimlico, where, though Mrs. Chuff, his mother-in-law, was at first happy, as the quarter was elegant and near her Sovereign, poor little Laura and the children found a woful difference. Where were her friends who came in with their work of a morning?--At Kennington and in th

El. Get you clear out of here. Only don't give me a hard time. All you'll get is both of us flashed." "Yeah, I know." Stan held out an arm. "Come on, let's go." * * * * * Stan watched as the chief test engineer waved a hand. "Two hundred twenty gravs," the man said. "Full swing completed on both axes. That's it. Ease off your tractors." He looked closely at his panel of meters, then got off his stool and stretched. "No evidence of strain. Looks as though all components are good." He turned, looking at the test operators. "Let's get this place cleaned up." The sense of disorientation set up by the tractors was subsiding. Stan got to his feet and looked at his companion. Dachmann nodded at him. "Well," he said slowly, "Golzer can get off the hook now. His run'll be approved. Suppose we get back on the job." He led the way out of the blockhouse tunnel. A car was pulling up at the entrance. A heavy, square face looked from a rear window and a large hand beckoned. "Dachmann, Graham. Over here." "Oh, oh." Dachmann sighed. "Here's trouble. Wizow doesn't come out here unless he's got something." The blocky production chief looked coldly at them as they approached the car. "It'll be a lot better," he growled, "if you two clear through my office before you start wandering all over the grounds." He looked at Stan. "Got a problem for you. Maybe we'll get some action out of you on this one." He held out a few sheets of paper. "Hold up over in the components line." He jabbed at a sheet with a forefinger. "Take a trip over there and kick it up." He glanced at Dachmann. "Got another one for you." Stan took the papers, studying them. Then he looked up. There was very little question as to the bottleneck here. Each material shortage traced back to one machine. He frowned. "Maintenance people checked over that machine yet?" he asked. Wizow shrugged impassively. "You're a staffman," he said coldly. "Been on parole to us long enough, you should know what to do, so I'm not going to tell you how. Just get to the troub

Ification of it. We are interrogating our own impressions, and asking ourselves among what kind of writers he ought to be placed. Rhetoric is a good and worthy art, and rhetorical authors are often more useful, more instructive, more really respectable than poetical authors. But it is to be said that Macaulay as a rhetorician will hardly be placed in the first rank, by those who have studied both him and the great masters. Once more, no amount of embellishment or emphasis or brilliant figure suffices to produce this intense effect of agitation rigorously restrained; nor can any beauty of decoration be in the least a substitute for that touching and penetrative music, which is made in prose by the repressed trouble of grave and high souls. There is a certain music, we do not deny, in Macaulay, but it is the music of a man everlastingly playing for us rapid solos on a silver trumpet, never the swelling diapasons of the organ, and never the deep ecstasies of the four magic strings. That so sensible a man as Macaulay should keep clear of the modern abomination of dithyrambic prose, that rank and sprawling weed of speech, was natural enough; but then the effects which we miss in him, and which, considering how strong the literary faculty in him really was, we are almost astonished to miss, are not produced by dithyramb but by repression. Of course the answer has been already given; Macaulay, powerful and vigorous as he was, had no agitation, no wonder, no tumult of spirit to repress. The world was spread out clear before him; he read it as plainly and as certainly as he read his books; life was all an affair of direct categoricals. This was at least one secret of those hard modulations and shallow cadences. How poor is the rhythm of Macaulay's prose we only realise by going with his periods fresh in our ear to some true master of harmony. It is not worth while to quote passages from an author who is in everybody's library, and Macaulay is always so much like himself that almost any one page will serve for an illustration exactly as well as any other. Let any one turn to his character of Somers, for whom he had so much admiration, and then turn to Clarendon's characte

Go fetch me dry clothes. I will change, and then we will ride away to Heathdown junction, and thence away to a new life in a new land.' Kitty drew in her breath. 'But are ye able? Are ye strong enough, Eric? Art sure thou canst give up all for a life with me?' 'Faith of a Borderer!' he answered gaily, as he kissed her hand. 'Now go and do as I bid. There's no time to be lost. See! I grow stronger every minute,' and he rose up on his knee and crawled forth from his refuge assisted by Kitty. Then she went swiftly back to the farm and brought with her dry clothes and a plaid, a second time she returned for meat and drink for her lover, and the third and last time for his horse, which she had already stabled in the byre. 'And now,' said Eric in her ear, as he lifted her into the saddle, 'we'll ride westward where we'll buy another "Bower" in another land.' * * * * * Through the early mist that morning an old shepherd was making his way home from a late mart, when he encountered what he swore was 'the wraith o' a great muckle moss-trooper wi' his marrow ahint him ridin' the ae black horse.' Arrived at home, he roused his wife, and imparted his information. 'Whisht, man, hand your whisht,' retorted she. 'Noo get intil your ain bed. Ye aye see _double_ after a mart day.'
