He flames as they sprang up. And the noise would not be shut out. It grew and grew, popping, crackling, roaring, until it seemed to fill the world.... * * * * * Perhaps he fainted. Or perhaps from numbness he slipped into a kind of deep sleep. Whichever it was, he returned to consciousness again suddenly. His hands had slipped from his ears, and a sound had brought him back. He lifted his head and listened. The fire had burnt itself out now. The only noise was the hiss and pop of dying embers. But these sounds were too gentle to have awakened him--it must have been something else. Yes--it was a voice. He could hear it quite plainly now. There were angry shouts coming from somewhere below the ledge. Carefully avoiding the sight of the pyre, David crawled to the edge and glanced over. Far down, on the slope at the foot of the scarp, was a tiny figure dancing and bellowing with rage. The Scientist had returned and discovered the ruins of his blind. David watched him dully. No need to worry about _him_ any more. How harmless he looked now, even ridiculous! David turned away. He noticed then that he was holding something in his hand, something soft and he

Ou mean,' they replied, 'do you prophesy that the prince will have a fever?' "'He is going to have it.' "'You see, you are a sorcerer,' said the jailer, 'you make predictions.' "And then he shut him in prison, to go away and to relate his conversation to them all. "During this time, they called in a healer who stated that the wounds of the great nobleman were not mortal in themselves, but that the fever which had declared itself could become dangerous. "He was cured after long months. "During this time the poor man languished in his prison, from whence he was only taken to appear before the judges. "Accused of sorcery and of using black magic, he explained very simply that he had foreseen the danger, because in raising his eyes he had noticed that the part of the ground over which the herald had passed was sinking, and that he had drawn the following conclusions: "The earth seemed to have only a medium thickness. "Under the feet of the herald he had seen it crumble and fall in. "He had deduced from this that a weight five times as heavy added to that of the palanquin, would not fa

Hange. But the part made a hit. "Isn't she just like some little girl who used to go to school with you--that funny, stupid Ermengarde?" one girl would say to another. "They're all natural, but she's absolutely perfect." "Sara's a dear," said the Princess, "but I want to talk to Ermengarde. Mayn't I go behind? We actor people always like to do that, you know." So she was escorted behind the scenes, and it was the proudest moment of Roberta's life when the Princess, having asked particularly for her, said all sorts of nice things about her "real talent" and "artistic methods." "That settles it, Roberta," said Betty, who was behind the scenes in her capacity of chief dressing-maid and first assistant to the make-up man. "You've got to try for senior dramatics." "Do you really think I could get a part?" asked Roberta coolly. "I think you might," said Betty, amazed beyond words by Roberta's ready acquiescence. "You probably won't

Ed, until mass is again daily said within these consecrated walls, and finally until San Carlos of Carmelo is again a worthier Carmel, "for the greater honor and glory of God" and the praises of His Virgin Mother once more are sung about this smiling valley where the Christian Indian children gathered the beautiful wild flowers of the blooming meadows to adorn the hallowed shrines, ere chimed the Angelus at evenings mellow glow. Chapter IX Reverend Raymond M. Mestres of Monterey Writes Historical Drama--"Fray Junipero" Beautiful among beautiful historical dramas is the mission play "Fray Junipero" written by Reverend Raymond Mestres, pastor of San Carlos Church (Capilla Real de San Carlos) of Monterey. Many men and women have undertaken to write about mission times, but we may safely assert that this good priest so unassuming in what he does, is above all qualified to handle this subject, being first of all a religious, a native of Barcelona, the Metropolis of the Province of Catalonia, which can claim Junipero Serra and so many of the early Spanish missionaries, explorers and settlers, and being too an artist and scholar in every way acquainted with the history of the missions, having made it a special study during his twenty-seven years of residence (as a priest) in four mission towns of California, twenty-one of which have been spent in that chief of mission towns, Monterey. Unbiased, careful of detail and true to history, while not wanting in artistic setting "Fray Junipero" carries the audience in Act I back to the College of Fernando, when Junipero Serra received his commission to come to California as Father Pre
