Ance. The former, by wheeling to the left and retaining several lines, kept up the fight successfully against the enemy who came up the ravine, but the latter was flanked and obliged to give way. De Trobriand's two regiments in front had a most determined fight, and would not yield the ground. When relieved by Zook's force they fell back across the wheat-field. There Birney used them as a basis of a new line, brought up two fresh regiments, charged through the field, and drove the enemy back to the stone fence which bounded it. Caldwell's division of Hancock's corps now came on to renew the contest. Caldwell formed his men with the brigades of Cross and Kelly in front, and those of Zook and Brooke in rear. In the advance Colonel Cross was killed, and the front line being enfiladed in both directions, was soon so cut up that the rear line came forward

She had gone. I've since been knocking about, unable to get any work, for no one will engage me without a character, as they guess that I'm a runaway, and take me for a young thief. I've sold my clothes and everything I had for food, and have got only these rags to cover me." I knew that what Dick said was true. I asked him if he still wished to be a sailor, or would rather go up the country and seek for employment, which I was sure he would be able to obtain with my brother's recommendation. "I would rather be a sailor than anything else, if I could serve under a good captain," he answered. "Well, then, stop a moment, and I'll speak to my brother," I said; and I ran after Harry. I told him in a few words about Dick. "Well, he may come with us," he said. "But he must try to make himself useful, and not fancy that he is a young gentleman to do what he likes." I ran back to Dick. The poor fellow was delighted, and burst into tears. "I own, Ned, I've had nothing to eat all day in this land of plenty, for I could not bring myself to beg, and nobody offered me anything," he exclaimed, scarcely able for shame to get out his words. I fortunately had a shilling in my pocket. "Here, Dick, go and get something to eat," I said, giving it to him. I thought that he would rather have some food first, before he came to talk with Harry. "Then come up to my brother's house--you can easily find it--and I will speak to him in the meantime." Dick promised to come. While we walked home I told my brother more about Dick. "It is very clear that the first thing we must do for him is to give him an outfit, or he'll not be presentable on board, and then I hope, from gratitude, that he will behave well," he observed. On our way we stopped at an outfitter's, and Harry gave an order to the storekeeper to supply whatever I might se

Y all these taken notice of by me from the genuine letter, but for fear some future letter from the vixen should escape my hands, in which she might refer to these names? And, if none of them were to have been found in this that is to pass for her's, I might be routed horse and foot, as Lord M. would phrase it in a like case. Devilish hard (and yet I may thank myself) to be put to all this plague and trouble:--And for what dost thou ask?--O Jack, for a triumph of more value to me beforehand than an imperial crown!--Don't ask me the value of it a month hence. But what indeed is an imperial crown itself when a man is used to it? Miss Howe might well be anxious about the letter she wrote. Her sweet friend, from what I have let pass of her's, has reason to rejoice in the thought that it fell not into my hands. And now must all my contrivances be set at work, to intercept the expected letter from Miss Howe:

sweetness, and his fiery eyes Grown humid, as he fixed them on the Queen In soft entreaty. From her lofty brow, So pale and passive, had the shadow rolled, As slightly and unconsciously she bent To his quick utterance. A sudden ray Stole from the twilight of her deepening eyes, And a warm redness into either cheek, Troubling its cold repose, shot quickly up. A moment of suspense, and then she spoke: "'Tis true that I thy body might restore, Since but suspension of its human powers, And not its loss or injury, I control. But what assurance have I that this boon May not prove dangerous? Mortals have what we, With all our vast machinery and weird powers Moving the earth, the sea and air, have not-- And that is--SOUL. A soul and body, too, Might circumvent us--work us desperate harm;-- At least 'tis wise to fear the things unknown, And to be chary how we give them scope. As long as thy body's powers restrain, Thy spirit to my will in bondage is; Thou hast no wherewithal to make ado-- No weapon at thy service--art a slave,-- And shall I give to thee a master's place? Yet, thou hast wakened in me a new thought. What is this love of which you mortals tell?-- Which puts such tender sweetness in your tones Such brightness in your looks, and makes you turn Upon each other such delighted eyes? Your words have stirred strange pleasure in my heart: I, too, would know what love is. I command That thou shalt teach me, BERTHO. Let the girl Return, uninjured, to her southern bowers; Whilst thou remain to teach me this new lore. Perchance, in finding Love, I'll gain a soul, And learn of immortality; and all The vague, sad intuitions that now mock me, Make real, and I become what I have dreamed. Make these things come to pass, and thou shalt have, Thy body and thy freedom, and a place, The highest of my chieftains. Follow me!" These ominous words of the enamored Queen, Spoken as though she knew not what it was That one should think of disobedience, Poor OLIVE heard, with looks of agony Fixed on the speaker's face--that Northern face, Wild in its power and in its beauty weird. The starry halo of that tintless crown, The midnight blackness of her plentiful hair, Set off the splendor of the countenance On which the maiden bent her pale regard.
