Greetings - This Old Gezzer has only recently tried to become familiar with Linux BDI & make Installation on a CNC System. Hope I got the picture right? Installation is on an OS free system no other systems on HD. Using Linux BDI & EMC 4.18 to install. Piece of cake - Right? Can get to the Graphical Interface (x) configuration, easy enough, then (hope you all are ready for this) get this window stating that an exception occurred. "an unhandled exception has occurred. This is most likely a bug." Also in another screen get the message - Init: cannot execute "/etc/X11/prefdm" - Init: Id "x" respawning too fast : disabled for 5 minutes. That's the end of the story & installation. Didn't mean to write a novel but any assistance or direction will be very much appreciated. Thank you all very much! Pepper

Peter: I'd start at this link: <http://www.cncgear.com/EMC/BDI/> and download and burn the BDI-4.38.iso you can see there. Lots of build problems are bypassed by having a fully working emc install that you only need to configure for your hardware and then run it. There is also a wiki link off linuxcnc.org with a page detailing howto download, build, and use the emc2 tree from a cvs pulldown. This is however the development branch, and may not build on any given evening, so I do a new pull & build about weekly. This is a much more capable (IMO) version of emc with a few gnarly places here and there, but the development pace is fairly feverish. I'd make a swag that it will be ready for all to beat on before very much longer. Given warmer weather since my shop isn't heated, I'd be carving parts with emc2 right now. -- Cheers, Gene People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word 'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's stupid bounce rules. Gene: Your email & information made my day/night as I've been working on the instruction you provided. So far, I've been able to download the BDI and would like to burn ........ :) Anyway, was not able to complete the CD writing as I got an error in the writing process wizard that MS XP uses. Something about the CD disc may no longer be useable??? I wouldn't know how to react if everything would of went without any errors showing up. Will check this out further in the morning. By the time I'm able to get this sorted out that EMC 2 tree sounds like it may be ready to go. It's also encouraging to hear that you're making excellent progress. Thank you again for the assistance. Humph, winderz strikes again. But before I lay the blame 100% on Bill, did you also grab the md5sum of that iso, and did it match when you checked it? Good qwuestion but I don't know if winderz even has an md5sum function. I don't have a windows machine, and never have had one. Also, and correct cd burning seems to be a mystery to M$, the .iso image is just that, an image of the cd, and is to be burnt as such. If, when you have burnt the cd, you insert it back in the drive and mount it, or whatever winderz calls it, you see a single file named as the .iso, the the burn was in the wrong mode and you have a coaster. You should see a rather large group of files and directories if the burn is correct. In some burning softwares, the burn menu's keyword is to "burn an image" IIRC. That .iso is an "image" of a real disk, filesystem and all, so if when you're done with the burn and you still see that image.iso on the resultant disk, its burnt wrong. As its 620 some megs, the wrong mode may have added enough filesystem overhead to overflow a shorter disk, hence the error it reports. I always buy the 700 meg cd's as that seems to stop that particular error. The disk is still a coaster, but that error is gone. If you were on a linux machine, that .iso image can be mounted and accessed just as if it was burnt to a disk by mounting it using the "-o loop" option as part of the mount command line. I've done it, but I'd have to consult the manpages again now before I'd get it right.

No problem, Peter, glad I was able to help a wee bit.

There are a few md5sum utilities available to download for M$ platforms, some for free, others cost a few bucks. Just google for them.. On occasion, you will get a bad burn which is not so easy to test for under Windows, so when you boot from the CD, type in "linux checkmedia" at the very first boot screen - Follow the simple instructions, and you will get a pass or fail message when complete. The error that Peter reports sounds very much like a corrupt CD rather than anything intrinsically wrong. First, I would strongly recommend using a later build than 4.18, the latest is 4.38 which contains a few bug fixes to EMC along with a large number of updated packages. Using the latest BDI-4 will make your life much easier should you wish to install new packages from Debian and/or upgrade EMC when a new version is released. It is also possible for Linux to be installed on a dual boot machine - At one point, I had a total of five flavours to boot from... The BDI-4 installer makes it possible to install Linux on a spare partition, or even a separate hard drive. Many people prefer to stick to a "one or other" either by using removable HD caddies, or a dedicated computer.
