The newest install and disk I have is 4.30 (yes I have been away for a while) Can I upgrade from there to 4.50 off the CD?
Yes. You can upgrade from 4.30 to a later version either from a CD or over the internet.
Or would a freash install make more sense? Is upgrading from 4.30 via apt-get to 4.50 doable?
I would recommend a staged upgrade rather than doing it all in one go. This should avoid any nasty little suprises - The first package to upgrade would be grub (make sure to run grub-install afterwards).. Before upgrading the kernel kernel, confirm that /dev/hda2 is mounted as / - The command `mount` should report back with "/dev/hda2 on / type ext3 (rw)" If it says anything else (which it probably will do if you manually partitioned the disk during installation), you MUST check /boot/grub/menu.lst - There is a line that reads: # kopt=root=/dev/hda2 ro splash=silent vga=788 Edit that one line with what ever mount reported root as and you will be able to reboot without problem after upgrading the kernel. If menu.lst and mount disagree and you upgrade the kernel, grub will barf on the next reboot.
pratical? I am on dialup so getting the cd is a problem.
Certainly is doable - I regularly update my main box over the internet without trouble (or rather, from a mirror maintained behind a firewall). Regards, Paul.
