Action points.

so by way of an update on the action points, from my side.

After the meeting i did ring harvey to discuss the matters we had discussed (helping to build a barn which we could jointly use). And to organise Lenny and myself to go view the site and materials. Perhaps it was a bit hasty, as i was all fired up from our constructive meeting and maybe dove in a bit bull-headed ,trying to get something moving while it was still hot!
It didnt go so well.
He was in the middle of bathing his kid so i should have let it go. however he seemed keen to talk. I told him there were a few volunteers we could muster and we just wanted to help him build and had discussed some ideas. From the start i got the feeling he was digging his feet in and shutting me off at every suggestion. I guess he must have felt a bit like his project was getting taken over or something because he was absolutely determined to ignore any input i tried to give, i got a bit hot headed and said something like "if we volunteer our time and energy do we get no say in the plans?" and the phone went dead. So he either dropped the phone in the bath....or took my question as too pushy.
I havnt followed it up. I did get the feeling that it was his way or the highway and sort of lost interest. I am too busy with my own life for that.
Not to say it is a dead end just that maybe someone else will have to start again. And actually I am too busy in the next 6 weeks to waste days on a dead end.

As for Marion I wrote a very nice e-mail (from my phone-which sometimes mis sends) and have had no reply. I was trying to get a foot in the door for spence as i know the woodland burial is something they are both currently considering. Having had no reply i am not sure if that is a polite "no" or something else. I will call her at some point when both spence and i are less busy.
I still think Marion and Preston Park would be a good small scale starting point.

On a more productive point, I went back to meet Nick (landowner or harveys leased area) and introduced someone from my workshop who bought some oak planks for a commission and am getting to knoe him a bit. Whilst waiting for him we were introduced to Nick (WEston?) who wrote a book about living in a treehouse and runs a foraging school from nicks wood.He was about to start skinning a deer with a group from London, so i was brief but he wants to build a treehouse for the foraging school and i said id be happy lend a day or two or maybe more. Anyone interested?
It seems Nick is keen to use his wood for good.
Avery

Date: Wed, 29 Jan 2014 13:07:55 -0800
From: abigailgibbs@yahoo.com
To: tree-project-organise@lists.ourproject.org; tree-project-organise@lists.ourproject.org
Subject: Re: [Tree-project-organise] Minutes of Community Tree Project Meeting January 4th 2014

Anyone up for a seedy Sunday! Letter to landowners
It would be good to draft a letter that could be given to land
owners stating our ideas and that we are looking at land.
There was some discussion about whether this is necessary right now
as we have 3 sites where it looks like we may be able to do some
stuff.
There was some discussion about the best way to approach land
owners. Purely as a forestry enterprise wanting access to woodland
for timber/firewood or as a social project - is this going to be
scary for land owners?

Woodland Burials
Spence has been working on a proposal for a woodland burial
service which would provide a complete service for people who are
recently bereaved. His research has showed that there is a strong
business case and that existing services are somewhat lacking in
their sensitivity.

Structure in Harveys/Nicks woodland
Harvey has asked if we would like to build a structure (barn?)
with him in the woods that he operates near Barcombe.
We decided this would be a nice thing to do. We can expect to have
use of the structure and could build something simple with a few
days work. One to cut the poles in the woods, one to erect the
structure, one to do the roof.
Action points -

*Avery and Lenny go look at the woods for suitable
timber/site

*Avery price up screws etc. for the barn building

Preston Park woods
Marion (the owner) has been away quite a bit but should be back
now. Spences' ideas should be of interest as she considered having
some burials on there a good way to protect the site from
developers. We had a look at land registry maps and discussed the
fact that the relatively small space available is going to limit
burials and/or other activities there.
Action point-

*Spence and Avery to talk to Marion about her site

Rapoports woodland
We have the potential to get some long ash poles and a long
spruce pole from a woodland near Gatwick. Any interest??

Shop space in Lewis High Street
Avery has been exploring paying for a bit of wall space in a new
garden centre/shop on Lewis High Street where we could promote the
project.
