Now and then, I accumulate a list of big things happening in my life and it occurs to me to email an update to people who have been supportive and enthusiastic along the way. That, and every now and then<a href="http://www.theselc.org/" target="_blank">my organization</a>does a big fundraising drive. So, I was thinking: If you are inspired by the list below, and if I'm helping to create the world you want to live in, would you consider<a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Selc-Spring-Matching-Grant-Campaign" target="_blank">making a contribution to my work by giving to the Sustainable Economies Law Center</a>(SELC)? Here's what I've been up to the last year:</div>
<div><br></div><div>1.<b>Building a Movement to Help People BecomeAwesome Lawyers Without Going to Law School:</b>In California and a few other states, apprenticing with an attorney enables people to become lawyers without going to law school. I have<a href="http://likelincoln.org/bios/" target="_blank">two amazing apprentices</a>, and we are blogging about the process and sharing resources with other prospective apprentices at this site:<a href="http://likelincoln.org/" target="_blank">The Apprenticeship Journals</a>.</div>
<div><br></div><div>2.<b>Creating Resilient Communities and Bringing Legal Services Down to Earth:</b>Each week, I can be found giving legal advice in a cafe through SELC's new program, the<a href="http://www.theselc.org/cafe/" target="_blank">Resilient Communities Legal Cafe</a>. It's 1/3 legal advice clinic, 1/3 living classroom, and 1/3 community-building salon -- all designed to create highly accessible legal services for worker cooperatives, urban farms, car sharing programs, housing cooperatives, child care cooperatives, micro-enterprise, and other innovative projects.</div>
<div><br></div><div>3.<b>Made a</b><b>Cartoon to Getthe World Excited About the Sharing Economy:</b>For years, I dreamed of making a goofy cartoon about sharing, and it's done! Check out "<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U31BKGEZvBs" target="_blank">Share Spray</a>" on youtube! That's me narrating and playing guitar.</div>
<div><br></div><div>4.<b>Wrote a Bestselling Book about Sharing Economy Law: </b>The American Bar Association published my second book in August and it has been on the ABA's bestseller list ever since. Find out more about<i><a href="http://www.theselc.org/book/" target="_blank">Practicing Law in the Sharing Economy</a></i>. If you buy it, use this discount code for half off: PAB12SHR. All royalties go to the Sustainable Economies Law Center. If you haven't seen my first book,<a href="http://www.sharingsolution.com/" target="_blank">The Sharing Solution</a>, check that out too!</div>
<div><br></div><div>5.<b>Grew the Sustainable Economies Law Center and Made Cartoons About It:</b>The nonprofit law project I co-founded in 2009 has now grown to an organization with six incredible staff. I can't even begin to list all of the things SELC is doing, but you can<a href="http://www.theselc.org/" target="_blank">find out more at our website</a>. And here are a couple cartoons about our work:<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVUXiUkfQCs" target="_blank">Economy Sandwich</a>and<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pBVWjValZ8" target="_blank">The Legal Roots of Resilience</a>.</div>
<div><br></div><div>6.<b>Legalized Home-Based Food Enterprise:</b>In 2011,SELC started a project to legalize the sale of certainhomemade food items in California. Thanks to the hard work of SELC staff, the<a href="http://www.theselc.org/cottage-food-laws/" target="_blank">California Homemade Food Act</a>went into effect this January.</div>
<div><br></div><div>7.<b>Legalizing Cooperative Housing and Making a Cartoon About That Too:</b>SELC co-drafted and helped to introduce legislation on cooperative housing in CA this year. AB 1024 is sailing through the legislature so far. I made a cartoon about it:<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HlDN6Yu0Gk" target="_blank">Housing for an Economically Sustainable Future</a>.</div>
<div><br></div><div>8.<b>Laying the Legal Foundation for Urban Agriculture and Community Farming:</b>SELC has introduced an a bill called the<a href="http://www.theselc.org/homegrown/" target="_blank">CA Neighborhood Food Act</a>, which will remove barriers to the sale of homegrown produce, and will remove various other barriers to urban food production. My first cartoon movie ever was about legal barriers to urban agriculture:<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYUr0GKWWX8" target="_blank">Citylicious</a>. I also recently co-taught - in Spanish - a workshop in the CA Central Valley on legal issues for community farms. The video of that will hit youtube soon.</div>
<div><br></div><div>9.<b>Supporting Asian Immigrant Farmers:</b>I've spent a good amount of my time in the last year supporting Chinese, Hmong, and Lao farmers who are facing enormous employment law barriers to small-scale family farming. In California, thousands of small farms are operated by Asian immigrant families, and many of these farms are at high risk of being put out of business due to casual participation of family and friends in the farm work. Read more about<a href="http://www.theselc.org/work-in-the-new-economy/#REFUGEEFARMERPROJECT" target="_blank">SELC's Refugee Farmer Project here</a>.</div>
<div><br></div><div>10.<b>And I'm on the (En)Rich List with folks like Gandhi and the Dalai Lama:</b>It's kind of mind blowing to end up on a list like this, but there I am at #33 on the<a href="http://enrichlist.org/the-list/" target="_blank">(En)Rich List</a>, which "celebrates a wealth of 100 inspirational individuals whose contributions enrich paths to sustainable futures."</div>
<div><div><br></div><div>Much of what I listed above is made possible by donations and grants, but I have to be honest that my colleagues at SELC and I have made a lot of this happen with a surprisingly small amount funding. We make every dollar count for a lot. We'll need to raise $300,000 by the end of the year to keep it all going in 2014. Anything you can contribute will keep us cranking out new laws, books, workshops, legal cafes, legal cartoons, and world-changing lawyers! <a href="http://www.razoo.com/story/Selc-Spring-Matching-Grant-Campaign" target="_blank">Here's the link to contribute</a>. You can also mail a check to the Sustainable Economies Law Center, 436 14th Street, Suite 1120, Oakland, CA 94612. </div>
<div>Thank you so much!!</div><div>Best,</div><div>Janelle Orsi</div></div><div><br></div><br>
