Remember the BM conference re China: They printed out the payment sheets IN ADVANCE for what they ESTIMATED the yield of the land would be.<br>
If there was a flood or drought, they wrote the ACTUAL delivery. Deficits were in RED INK.<br>
The example is in the BM, but behind glass, so we couldn’t photograph it to put on the cover.<br>
When floods occurred in Babylonia, the barley debts simply were annulled.<br>

I picked up a copy of Paul Kriwaczek’s book ‘Babylon’, published in 2010. Sadly he has died, I understand. The book seems good, and I notice the author draws largely on Marc Van Der Mieroop. Piotr Steinkeller is also quoted. Not easy to see all his sources as his bibliography is done in an unusual way. He follows Marc in attributing farmers debts to the over-optimism of the bureaucrats as to the yields of the lands. I remember Marc emphasising that point to me at the BM conference.<br>
