The historic emergency economic package that Congress and the White House
has put together this week will help address urgent crises created by the
COVID-19 epidemic, but it is only a first step. Healing the economy long
term means not restoring the structural conditions that caused the economy
to fall ill long before the novel coronavirus swept the globe. This week
The Next System Project's climate and energy program co-director Johanna
Bozuwa joined a group of experts and activists in authoring an open letter
to Congress calling for "a green stimulus to rebuild the economy." It calls
on the Congress to enact a long-term plan that does not "restore—or even
deepen—our reliance on fossil fuels" but instead "protects us from the
impact of climate change and lifts up workers and frontline communities."
