June's Community Wealth Building Newsletter from The Democracy Collaborative

Dear Colleague,

During the last month, The Democracy Collaborative convened two powerful
gatherings of leaders who are working to leverage anchor institution
resources to catalyze inclusive, economic development: the inaugural Anchor
Collaborative Convening and the two-year old Healthcare Anchor Network’s
bi-annual gathering. More than 200 participants in these two meetings
demonstrated not just a genuine interest in learning from one another, but
a commitment to creating new tools and resources to accelerate and deepen
anchor mission work. Read more about the work of the Healthcare Anchor
Network in *Modern Healthcare*

In light of aging infrastructure and the need to increase resilience to
climate change, the construction industry is poised to grow significantly
in the coming years. This new report from the Emerald Cities Collaborative
and PolicyLink discusses how to ensure that minority-owned, women-owned,
and disadvantaged businesses can participate in and benefit from this
growth. Outlining policy recommendations around inclusive procurement, the
report recommends a capacity-building initiative and the creation of a
community of practice to increase knowledge of how to shift spend towards
these enterprises. Read the full report here.

This new report from the Urban Institute assesses the relationship between
economic recovery and inclusion, finding that cities that ranked high when
it comes to economic and racial inclusion performed better economically
while recovering from distress. The report analyzes 274 US cities across
indices related to economic health, overall inclusion, and racial
inclusion, and then provides lessons learned from four cities advancing
inclusion: Columbus, Ohio; Lowell, Massachusetts; Louisville, Kentucky; and
Midland, Texas. Read the full report here

visualizes “hard to count” communities that might be at risk for
undercounting in the 2020 Census due to low self-response rates. Developed
