Dear Friends and Colleagues

Published in *Independent Science News* and *Exposed by CMD* on July 27th,

*'Poison Papers' Snapshot: HOJO Transcript Illustrates EPA Collusion With
Chemical Industry*

by Rebekah Wilce of the Center for Media and Democracy.

*Synopsis:* This is the first story based on the Poison Papers
<https://www.poisonpapers.org/>, a project of *Independent Science News* and
the Center for Media and Democracy. The Papers are a 20,000 document trove
of industry and regulatory papers collected primarily by Carol Van Strum
and just published by us on DocumentCloud. In 1978, EPA, faced with
evidence of rampant fraud over chemical safety testing at the largest
independent lab in the country, had a secret meeting with the chemical
industry. The newly-revealed transcript of that meeting shows how EPA
endangered the public by covering up this scandal to protect chemicals that
are still on the market today.

Please share if you find this story valuable.

Best wishes

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits
and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic
society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society
constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of
our country.”—Edward Bernays, Propaganda
