HR 1599, already passed by the US House of Representatives, is widely known
as the DARK act. DARK stands for Deny Americans the Right to Know Act
because the bill would prevent states from labelling GMOs. Some essential
facts about GMOs, if more widely known, could prevent this bill from
becoming law. One of these is that responsible and effective regulation is
being exercised by the FDA, which is a myth that was repeated in a recent
Senate hearing. Equally damaging is the standard perception that FDA is
acting lawfully in allowing GE foods onto the market.

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits
and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic
society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society
constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of
our country.”—Edward Bernays, Propaganda
