BISA-IPEG/University of Sheffield Seminar
Forced Labour, Trafficking, and Slavery: The Political Economy of
Exploitation and Protection in the 21st Century
Over the past fifteen years, forced labour, trafficking, and slavery have
become issues of major political and media concern. Governments are
beginning to act, with countries including the US, Canada, and Brazil
having recently launched national strategies to tackle human trafficking
and modern slavery. The UK’s draft Modern Slavery Bill is currently before
Parliament. Yet, such initiatives do little to address the political
economic drivers of these forms of exploitation, nor do they offer adequate
protection. This seminar will bring together academics, policy-makers, and
civil society figures to discuss and debate the political economy of
exploitation and protection in the 21st Century, including the role of
governments, business, and international organizations.
