Dr. Casey Hoy <http://oardc.osu.edu/phone_single.asp?id=314>, Kellogg
Endowed Chair in Agricultural Ecosystem Management<http://www.oardc.ohio-state.edu/amp/default.asp> at
The Ohio State University, among others developed an "Agroecosystem Health
Index." Here's a link<http://sustainabilityscience.org/content.html?contentid=2102>to an excerpt about it from the Science and Innovation for Sustainable
Development forum in 2009. While the index doesn't address the full import
of your question, it does offer some possibilities. Certainly, Dr. Hoy
would be a useful contact for more information.

Also, there's some interesting work being done by Dr. Stuart Gage<http://www.ent.msu.edu/Directory/Facultypages/gage/tabid/141/Default.aspx>at Michigan State University on soundscape
ecology <http://news.msu.edu/story/9029/&multi_media=3>, which analyzes
recorded sounds <http://www.real.msu.edu/> within a given area to better
understand the dynamics of the local ecology. Dr. Gage would also be a
good resource for additional information.
