Is India a feminine country? At a recent event, “Conversations with a Mystic”, the banker K V Kamath had a dialog with Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, the Isha Yoga proponent and respected sage and humanitarian. When Kamath asked about gender equality, Sadhguru said that the world’s emphasis in recent years has been on economics – a survival process that is essentially “male”. However, Sadhguru noted, as our survival – our physical needs, in other words – are met, we need to move on to facets of life that make survival meaningful. Here’s where the traditionally “female” principles of beauty, grace and art come into play. Unfortunately, we are clinging to economic success as the primary driver of humankind. We think life is about material wealth. Sadhguru suggests this has led to a systematic decline of traditional femininity. Many women think they need to act more like men to compete in the survival-oriented world. But the world will move
to the next level only if women – and, ultimately, men – feel free to express the feminine in all aspects of life. Today’s culture – competition, aggression, growth at any cost – need to be balanced by collaboration, nurturing, family values, conservation, patience and allowing things to emerge at their natural pace.
