 Hello,****

** **

This is a note for everyone attending the Future Learning Spaces Designs on
E-Learning 2011 conference.****

** **

I have mailed this to you all by sending the mail to Stefan and including
your mail addresses as blind carbon copies. Tomorrow when you join you will
be able to choose whether you wish your email address to be made public or
whether you wish to communicate solely through the site itself.****

** **

We told you at the beginning that we planned the conference to begin with a
period of online discussion to enable conversations to begin prior to you
all arriving in Finland. This is to alert you to the fact that the
designsonelearning2011.com web site has now been updated, to prepare for
this. There is now a login button at the bottom right of each page, which
you will be able to use as soon as you receive your user name and password.*
***

** **

Currently the web site shows the first draft version of the timetable. You
should already be able to find this under the Programme menu. You will see
there that all those who have submitted a paper or presentation have been
assigned to a conference theme and allotted a place in one of the eight
panels. You can see the titles of all the papers in each panel under the
Participants menu, beneath the details of the conference speakers.****

** **

There is a new Discussion menu which is, naturally, where the online
discussion phase of the conference will take place. There are three sub
menus: Activity, Members and Groups. Tomorrow, after some final testing, I
will send each of you a user name and a password. You will then be able to
take part in all of these.****

** **

The Activities section allows you to make status updates, in a similar way
to Facebook, Google+ or Twitter. You can use these to let people know what
you are thinking and planning, and anything else you wish to share with the
group.****

** **

The Members section contains a list of everyone. Please go to your own
Member Page when you have logged in and edit your profile, just as you might
in any social networking site. If everyone fills this in, and adds a photo,
then we should be able to talk and share in ways that will give us a flying
headstart for our activities when you finally arrive in Helsinki.****

** **

The Groups section is a way of drawing together the different elements of
the conference. We have created a group for each conference theme, as well
as a general group and a group for the barcamp and workshops. The full
papers are all available from within the groups, under the Documents tab.
Each group also has a Forum tab, which is where we can engage in
conversations too complex for the status updates.****

** **

Everyone will automatically be a member of every group. They are not meant
to divide us up - simply as a way of providing some structure!****

** **

I will also create a Help Topic in the general group, so if you have any
problems there will be a place where you can ask questions and seek advice.*
***

** **

You should all receive your user names and passwords within the next twenty
four hours. Please register as soon as you can, and definitely by Monday if
possible. On Monday morning I will go through the membership list and check
for any problems.****

** **

More tomorrow,****

** **
