I like the idea of coordinating student walkouts with OWS, but find
the students' criticisms of Mankiw's class somewhat problematic. They
probably need to understand the basic ideas of Smith, market-clearing
prices, etc., before they study Keynes' modifications -- just as they
need to be able to understand Newton before they tackle Einstein. I
certainly can see the argument for a basic course on the history of
economic thought, or a brief survey of heterodox economics in a study
unit in Econ 101. But you should be able to do things like avoid
subject-verb disagreement and dangling modifiers before you try to
write like James Joyce.
