[goodrelations] Fwd: Google Penalizes Overstock for Search Tactics - WSJ.com
To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004 at gmail.com>
"Google <http://online.wsj.com/public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=GOOG>
Inc.
is penalizing Overstock.com<http://online.wsj.com/public/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=OSTK>
Inc.
in its search results after the retailer ran afoul of Google policies that
prohibit companies from artificially boosting their ranking in the Internet
giant's search engine."
"Internet search experts say that sites associated with educational
institutions, which come with ".edu" in their Web addresses, are often
considered by Google's search algorithm to be more authoritative than
commercial sites. Experts say educational sites rarely link to commercial
sites, so a shopping site can surge in Google rankings if an .edu page links
to it.
"Google has made clear they believe these links should not factor into their
search algorithm," said Patrick Byrne, Overstock's chief executive, in a
statement. "We understand Google's position and have made the appropriate
changes to remain within Google's guidelines."

Hi All,
I would love for you all to read the article below! It is my belief, that
colleges and universities have been linked back to Overstock.com as a result
of their adoption of goodrelations and rdfa for e-commerce! To hear that
tOVerstsock have been penalized for this (backlinks from goodrelations
adoption in effect) as a result of unethical back linking is amazing to me!
(If you read the article below, it specifically cites back linking from .edu
sites as a judgement for downgrading the SEO ranking of the site)
I do not see any black hat tactics here! Merely academic references! Would
love to hear any thoughts on the matter
Here is the link to the article! And FYI, this has serious bottom line
impact!
The original article and citation against JC Penny was in the NY times.

Barbara Starr
