Stuck in Emacs Mode when entering via Visual Mode

Hi,

I'm likely just doing something wrong, but I tried the following:

1) Visit a file - start in <N> mode
2) Type V to go to <V> mode
3) Type C-z to go to <E> mode
4) Type C-z to go to <V> mode again
5) Type ESC

I would expect to be in <N> mode now, but Instead I end up back in <E>
mode. What am I doing wrong?
