problems with latest git release

Eric,

I noticed the same issue.

I wasn't able to debug it, but I found that the issue went away when I
forced emacs to use the un-compiled version of evil-common.el (i.e. I
just deleted evil-common.elc)

I don't understand byte-compiling well enough to know why that makes a
difference, but hope that can help somebody else figure it out.
