The article is about an experiment I have been exploring to enable<br>
students to create knowledge and awaken their authentic aesthetic<br>
sense.<br>
<br>
I am trying to initiate discussions on three aspects. One is
knowledge<br>
creation, the second is the role of the sense of beauty in
cognition,<br>
and the third challenging the very notion of teaching. That is one
who<br>
has actually created knowledge only would know the fallacy that<br>
teaching would result in learning. The fragmented approach to art
is<br>
another myth of modernity.<br>
<br>
What is taught as fragments do not get synthesized automatically
as<br>
our cognitive system is equipped to learn holistically. The way we<br>
learned our mother tongue - without neither knowing grammar nor<br>
knowing the meaning of each word we are able to speak fluently.<br>
<br>
Even though I did not do any teaching, the way I approached
elements<br>
of design was to start with various elements one by one and then
go<br>
into the principles also one after the other. By this approach, a<br>
proper synthesis doesn’t happen. This is the way we were taught
the<br>
second language where we learned first the meaning of many words
and<br>
the grammar but we did not know how to speak. Putting together
these<br>
elements and rules later does not work.<br>
<br>
So, like in the way how we learn our mother tongue, we started
with<br>
experiencing beauty, and then as we began to reflect on why
something<br>
is beautiful we were able to see what are the constituents of
beauty<br>
and how it all came together to constitute beauty.<br>
