Dear Christian and fellow PeDAGoG Members:

The article, "Politics of rights based approaches in Conservation (Land Use Policy 2013) " uses a human rights lens to understand accountability in global conservation. The article "From Racialized Neocolonial Global Conservation to an Inclusive and Regenerative Conservation" offers one of the most comprehensive overview of the modern history of global conservation, its neoliberalization and militarization, and its justice implications. I'd love to hear your feedback on the notion of "regenerative environmentalism" we develop in this article. Part of the confusion has been created by a strong emphasis on the question of 'recognition', which had the effect of (I am sure this was not the intention of the scholars and activists who emphasized the importance of recognition in justice arguments and praxis). Cynical global actors latched on the rhetoric of recognition and have exploited the popularity of rights-discourses to whitewash. A 20 years long history of rights-washing in global conservation offers a relevant example and a big note of caution. So, we must see to it that this cynical politics is not repeated in the climate space (though there are already indications that this is being orchestrated in a very systematic way).

On the politics/policy end of things we must ask what sort of accountability mechanisms are in place to hold powerful global North actors to account for their declaration of support for the rights of Indigenous/Territorial communities, and other rural communities. Having said that, I also believe that in places where Indigenous Peoples have strong capabilities to work with big finance and where there exists a strong rule of law of framework to ensure accountabilities, Indigenous Peoples have engaged with climate finance successfully -- see a brief explanation of this argument in this popular press piece https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/8/22770463/jeff-bezos-earth-fund-landscape-restoration-conservation-trees-indigenous-peoples), though this report failed to cite the example of Yurok tribe in CA, who have used carbon forestry money to buy back their traditional territories). However, such expectations cannot be pinned to Indigenous Peoples in S. Asia and Africa, where climate finance will further marginalize Indigenous Communities.
