In the third episode of our More than Human webinar series, Åsa
Andersson Martti, Francis Joy and John C. Ryan will tell us about the
different ways of communicating with the forests, speaking from the Sámi
tribe's traditions and Indigenous knowledges, as well as from scientific
perspectives of forest intelligence, memory and sentience.

About the speakers: 

ÅSA ANDERSSON MARTTI: ÅSA ANDERSSON MARTTI IS AN INDIGENOUS SÁMI AND
TORNEDALIAN ARTIST, HEALER, AND ACADEMIC RESEARCHER BASED IN KIRUNA,
SWEDISH SÁPMI. SHE IS FOUNDER OF THE HISTORICAL AND ANIMISTIC PILGRIM
TRAIL ‘SÁMI TRAIL OF TEARS’ [3] BASED ON HER MOTHER’S CHILDHOOD
MEMORIES.

FRANCIS JOY: FRANCIS JOY, ORIGINALLY FROM YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND, LIVES IN
FINLAND, AND WORKS AS A POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
LAPLAND ARCTIC CENTRE AS A MEMBER OF THE ARCTIC ANTHROPOLOGY RESEARCH
TEAM. HIS FIELD OF STUDY INCLUDES PREHISTORIC ROCK ART, SÁMI
PRE-CHRISTIAN RELIGION AND PRACTICE OF SÁMI SHAMANISM BOTH PAST AND
PRESENT. FRANCIS IS ALSO A DRUID.

JOHN C. RYAN: JOHN C. RYAN IS A RESEARCHER IN LITERARY STUDIES, CREATIVE
WRITING, AND ENVIRONMENTAL HUMANITIES. HE IS ADJUNCT SENIOR RESEARCH
FELLOW AT THE NULUNGU RESEARCH INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME,
AUSTRALIA. FUNDED BY THE KONE FOUNDATION IN HELSINKI, HIS CURRENT
PROJECT EXAMINES POSSIBILITIES FOR COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION
BETWEEN PEOPLE AND TREES IN NORTHERN FINLAND. HE ALSO EDITS THE NEW
