– FRAMEWORK:
Since the beginning of the new millennium, the commons have emerged as a
key socio-political, economic, and cultural reference. Crucially, in the
contemporary European context, the commons arena embodies a visionary
pragmatism with an emphasis on bottom-up participation. The seminar aims to
present recent initiatives in this field, new figures of the commons, in
search of better ways of governing ourselves in the contemporary world.

The invited speakers will present in-depth case studies analysis involving
new social movements and alternative forms of self-organization. Among
them, the experience of municipalism in Barcelona (Spain), the
mobilizations for the commons in Greece, and the Italian commons network.

– THE SPEAKERS:

Alexandros Kioupkiolis is an Associate Professor in Contemporary Political
Theory at the School of Political Sciences, Aristotle University,
Thessaloniki (Greece). He is an ERC Grantee (ERC COG 2017-2020) and a
Fulbright Scholar.

Manuela Zechner is a researcher and facilitator. Her work focuses on social
movements, feminism, commons, and ecology. She is currently a postdoctoral
researcher at the MovE project of Jena University (Germany). From 2017-20
she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Heteropolitics project, an
ERC-funded research on commons in Mediterranean Europe.
