Dear Renata and PeDAGoG Friends:

Agree very much with Renata's reference to the manner in which such finance can empower local communities. Part of the confusion has been created by a strong emphasis on the question of 'recognition', which had the effect of (I am sure this was not the intention of the scholars and activists who emphasized the importance of recognition in justice arguments and praxis). Cynical global actors latched on the rhetoric of recognition and have exploited the popularity of rights-discourses to whitewash. A 20 years long history of rights-washing in global conservation offers a relevant example and a big note of caution. So, we must see to it that this cynical politics is not repeated in the climate space (though there are already indications that this is being orchestrated in a very systematic way).

On the politics/policy end of things we must ask what sort of accountability mechanisms are in place to hold powerful global North actors to account for their declaration of support for the rights of Indigenous/Territorial communities, and other rural communities. Having said that, I also believe that in places where Indigenous Peoples have strong capabilities to work with big finance and where there exists a strong rule of law of framework to ensure accountabilities, Indigenous Peoples have engaged with climate finance successfully -- see a brief explanation of this argument in this popular press piece https://www.theverge.com/2021/11/8/22770463/jeff-bezos-earth-fund-landscape-restoration-conservation-trees-indigenous-peoples), though this report failed to cite the example of Yurok tribe in CA, who have used carbon forestry money to buy back their traditional territories). However, such expectations cannot be pinned to Indigenous Peoples in S. Asia and Africa, where climate finance will further marginalize Indigenous Communities. If some of you'd like to read more about this comparative approach to environmental and climate justice, some of the key articles are available in the Public Dropbox hyperlinked in my signature below.

My best wishes,

Prakash

Dear Rosalyn and all,

It’s truly a more challenging than controversial issue and, for sure, climate finance needs to support indigenous and traditional communities actions by reaching territories and local grassroots level properly. A situation that shows up is about the conciliation or dialogue of the indigenous cosmovision with the rules and laws of society, and the bureaucracy that ends up swallowing their own forms of indigenous organization. One way to try to overcome these questions, I think, is by creating own indigenous funds and financial mechanisms that enable them to play a leading role in autonomous projects management. Capacity building, investors' confidence, learning from past experiences and so forth are some of the challenges to be faced, but none of this prevents crucial forces from being added, helping to protect and empower their voices against capitalist destructive forces and address climate change.

Congratulations for the conference you are planning on this very relevant theme!

Thanks for having the opportunity to discuss it.

Best wishes,

Renata

Hi everyone

I’m currently planning a conference proposal for 2023, Conceptualing a Cosmopolitics of Climate Change and Collapse, with a panel dedicated to this theme. I have several people who would speak strongly in favour – I’d be interested to hear from those who think it controversial and why.

Best wishes,

Rosalyn
