2021.12.15 PP21 Pre-Forum on Rural and Indigenous Community Building in Asia

Dear Friends,

We would like to invite you to a PP21 Pre-Forum on Rural and Indigenous Community Building in Asia, on Dec 15, 2021, Wednesday, Seoul/Tokyo time 5pm, Hong Kong/Manila time 4pm, Bangkok time 3pm, Delhi time 1.30pm, UTC 8am.

At this Pre-Forum, we will examine and discuss some experiences from China, Japan and Thailand, and to prepare for a PP21 Forum some time in Spring 2022 to cover experiences from various regions in Asia. All friends from Asia and all corners of the world are welcome to present experiences and/or to join the zoom meeting, for free. It will be in English, but if voluntary interpreters can offer help, there can be other languages.

Objective: to reconnect with PP21 partners over the years, invite the younger generation to participate in writing or helping to write the experience of communities, share reviews and prospects for alternatives, and start the regeneration of PP21 process in building an Alliance of Hope. The forum will encourage partners to be involved in the “Asia Mobilizing for Mexico 2022 WSF” (Jan 19-21, 2022 meetings are being convened), the WSF in Mexico scheduled for May 2022, the 9th South South Forum on Sustainability (July-Aug 2022), etc. Further PP21 forums can also be planned.

Title of Pre-Forum: Rural and Indigenous Community Building in Asia

Format: Brief papers in English (or translated into English from the local languages) of around 1000-2000 words on each “case study” to be circulated to the PP21 network and posted on PP21 website. Based on the papers, there will be presentations of 5 minutes followed by discussion of 5 minutes of each case study on Dec 15, then comparative or general discussions.

Contents: The study can be a review of the history of rural reconstruction, indigenous practices, community response to climate change, pandemic or livelihood issues, or highlights of positive/negative experiences from which lessons can be learnt. Some examples are: review of the Assembly of the Poor in Thailand, farmer convergences in Japan since 1989, rural reconstruction movement in Nepal or China, current state of farmer struggles in India, sustainability or self-reliance practices in communities, the use of indigenous herbs during the pandemic…

Languages: the webinar provides the facilities but it is up to participants to arrange for interpreters between English and a local language (for example, Thai, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Bahasa, Tagalog, Hindi, Malayalam…). English will be the relay language. This way, rural and indigenous communities can participate.
