[PeDAGoG] Towards a non-extractive and care-driven academia

Dear all,

Sharing below an article from colleagues and a collective of critical
geographers and scholars. I would also like to introduce myself. I am Mary
Ann Manahan, an incoming PhD assistant at the Ghent University's Department
of Conflict and Development Studies. My research interests cover systemic
transformations, political ecology, gender justice, and social movement
resistance struggles.

I also co-facilitate the Beyond Development Global Working Group, along
with Miriam Lang and Mabrouka M'break.

Looking forward to learning and exchanging views/ideas/methods with this
group.

Please find below a link to a piece we wrote as a collective in which we
reflect on the extractive nature of academia, the colonial legacies and
"white gaze" that permeates knowledge "creation" in a growth-oriented
knowledge economy, and the professionalization of social justice critique.
We offer thoughts on how we might reclaim what the university could be – a
place that equips people with the knowledge they need to
unlearn/unmake/dismantle the framings and worldviews that lend themselves
to white supremacy and other forms of oppression more broadly.
